Push Horizons!

The Riding

Picos de Europa / Liebana-Potes is a true mountain basecamp: limestone walls, deep valleys, ancient tracks and some of the most dramatic scenery in northern Spain. It is a place for riders who want scale, not convenience. The best trips here are built around route craft, weather windows and realistic group fit. The reward is huge, but so is the terrain.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Liebana / Potes is a mountain-town basecamp at the edge of the Picos de Europa: steep valleys, limestone walls, old routes, Cantabrian culture and big scenic ride days. It is not the easiest place to improvise, but with the right route logic it can become one of northern Spain's most memorable MTB weeks.

Best season

May-June / September-October

Caution season

Winter and early spring can bring snow, storms and high-route limitations. High summer can be warm in the valleys and busy around popular access points.

Ride character

Limestone mountain valleys, ancient paths, steep climbs, village links, forest sections, high passes, Picos de Europa views and Cantabrian mountain culture.

Typical ride day

25-50 km / 900-1,800 m+ / 4-7 hours

Technical level

Intermediate+ to advanced / approx. S2-S4

Fitness demand

High. Expect long climbs, physical descents, mountain weather and serious elevation changes.

Best bike

Trail or enduro MTB. eMTB highly suitable for climbing-heavy valley-to-pass routes.

eMTB suitability

Excellent - eMTBs help unlock big climbs, long linking routes and scenic high-valley days.

Guide logic

Recommended for first visit, high-mountain route choices, weather-sensitive days, exposed terrain and mixed-level groups.

Shuttle usefulness

Useful in selected cases, but the main logic is mountain route craft, eMTB linking and realistic day design.

Weather logic

Mountain weather matters. Fog, storms, wet forest sections and valley heat require flexible route planning.

Best for

  • Strong mountain riders
  • Scenery-first eMTB groups
  • Riders who want Picos de Europa atmosphere from a real mountain town
  • Adventure-oriented trail riders
  • Groups seeking limestone valleys, culture and big views

Not ideal for

  • Beginners
  • Riders wanting short easy loops
  • Pure bike-park riders
  • Groups avoiding long climbs, exposure or mountain-weather decisions

Why Ride Liebana?

Ride Beneath The Limestone Gods

Some mountain bike destinations are defined by mountains. Liebana is defined by a valley. The Picos dominate the skyline, but the ride zone is the hidden kingdom below: forested walls, canyon trails, stone paths and authentic villages protected by enormous limestone guardians. The riding feels isolated, vertical and deeply cultural.

  • Archetype: The Hidden Valley of the Picos
  • Basecamp: Potes, the valley capital
  • Ride beneath the Picos rather than inside the protected park core
  • A flagship for ancient trails, deep descents, culture and mixed-group appeal

Basecamp

Potes: The Valley Capital

Potes is the heart of Liebana. Positioned at the convergence of the valley's major riding zones, it gives direct access to La Viorna, Cicera, Navedo, Pico Jano, Camaleno, Fuente De, Santo Toribio and the Centro BTT Liebana network. Ancient bridges, tower houses, restaurants and mountain views make it one of the most atmospheric basecamps in northern Spain.

  • Basecamp archetype: the Valley Capital
  • Direct ride access without depending on shuttles every day
  • Alternative basecamp: Camaleno, the alpine gateway
  • Post-ride ritual: cocido lebaniego, sidra and orujo de Liebana

At A Glance

Picos Backdrop, Ancient Trails And Massive Descents

Liebana combines Picos de Europa scenery with practical riding access around the valley. The strongest days are ancient, steep, forested and full of cultural texture.

  • Picos de Europa backdrop
  • Historic Potes basecamp
  • Centro BTT Liebana network
  • Atlantic and Mediterranean forests
  • Massive vertical descents
  • Ancient stone singletracks
  • Outstanding E-MTB destination
  • Cocido, sidra and orujo culture

Signature Rides

The Five Rides That Define The Valley

The signature rides explain Liebana through technical double descents, gorge riding, forest loam, flowing wilderness and remote high-country exploration.

  • Cicera-Navedo Double Header: the valley benchmark
  • Aguera Navedo: the gorge slayer
  • Aguera Cicera: the loam vault
  • Gigedo & La Joya: the flowing wilderness
  • Brana de los Tejos: the last wilderness

Hero Ride

Cicera-Navedo Double Header: The Valley Benchmark

The defining Liebana ride starts with a long climb from the valley floor, reaches high pastures above Cicera, then delivers two legendary rewards. Aguera Cicera drops through deep oak forest and Atlantic loam. Aguera Navedo follows with steeper, rockier, more exposed ancient stone paths toward the Hermida Gorge.

  • Distance: 34.5 km
  • Climbing: 1,420 m
  • Difficulty: expert
  • Ride type: big mountain enduro

The Defining Reveal

The Viorna Balcony

After climbing above Potes, the trail emerges onto an exposed ridgeline. The valley drops beneath your wheels, the limestone walls of the Picos rise directly ahead and the whole kingdom suddenly makes sense. You do not ride the Picos. You ride beneath them.

  • The defining reveal moment of Liebana
  • Potes below, limestone giants above
  • A balcony view that explains the entire destination
  • A scale-led riding experience without entering the protected alpine core

Ride Character

Valley Gravity

Liebana's terrain is a blend of oak loam, ancient stone paving, limestone slabs, chestnut woods, canyon descents and technical switchbacks. It is valley gravity: raw, natural, old and constantly framed by the Picos.

  • Deep forest loam and old stone paths
  • Limestone slabs, canyon descents and technical switchbacks
  • Huge vertical from ridges back to Potes
  • E-MTBs help unlock repeated climbs and bigger valley circuits

The Four Faces

La Viorna, Cicera, Navedo And Pico Jano

The valley has four defining faces. La Viorna is the western guardian and proving ground. Cicera is the loam vault. Navedo is the gorge slayer above La Hermida. Pico Jano is the wilderness connector, with remote high tracks and historic mountain routes.

  • La Viorna: the western guardian
  • Cicera: the loam vault
  • Navedo: the gorge slayer
  • Pico Jano: the wilderness connector

Scenery

Hidden Valley, Sacred Trails And The Valley Table

Liebana hides behind the Hermida Gorge, protected by mountains and separated from the outside world. Santo Toribio adds the pilgrimage layer, Brana de los Tejos adds ancient yew forests, and the food culture is pure mountain reward: cocido lebaniego, sidra and orujo after a long day on old paths.

  • Primary natural force: limestone walls and hidden valley topography
  • Cultural identity: Potes, Santo Toribio, old trails and mountain villages
  • Terrain identity: loam, stone, limestone, canyon and forest
  • Food ritual: cocido lebaniego, sidra and orujo de Liebana

Best Season

April To November

April to November is the main riding season. Spring is green with flowing rivers. Summer opens high mountain options. Autumn is often outstanding, with cooler air and exceptional colours. Winter can work on lower valley routes depending on conditions.

How We Build It

Big Descents From A Hidden Valley

We build Liebana around verticality and culture. The best trips combine La Viorna, Cicera, Navedo, Pico Jano, Camaleno, Fuente De, Santo Toribio and valley food rituals. It is also one of Spain's strongest MTB destinations for mixed groups because non-riders have world-class mountain access and recovery options.

  • Available as a flexible 3-8-day Atlantic mountain Basecamp
  • Self-guided route packs for confident riders
  • Guided support for complex weather, trail condition and big vertical days
  • Pairs naturally with Picos de Europa, Debabarrena or Lesaka / Baztan

Who It Is For

For Enduro Riders, Big Mountain Lovers And Culture Seekers

Liebana suits enduro riders, E-MTB riders, adventure seekers, big mountain lovers, culture and food lovers, multi-day explorers and mixed groups. It is less suitable for bike-park riders, flow-trail specialists, beginners, groomed-trail seekers or flat-trail groups.

  • Perfect for: enduro, E-MTB and adventure riders
  • Perfect for: culture, food, mountain scenery and mixed groups
  • Less suitable for: bike-park riders and beginners
  • Less suitable for: flow specialists and flat-trail seekers

Basecamp DNA

Adventure, Culture And Mountain Atmosphere

Liebana scores highest for adventure, scenic value, cultural depth, mountain atmosphere and E-MTB potential. Enduro, technical challenge, flow and wilderness are strong, while family suitability is moderate because the best days are substantial mountain rides.

  • Adventure 5/5
  • Scenic Value 5/5

Why We Selected It

The Hidden Valley Beneath The Picos

We selected Liebana because nowhere else in Spain combines medieval mountain culture, massive limestone scenery, ancient stone pathways and authentic valley riding in such a complete landscape. It gives the Atlantic collection its hidden mountain kingdom.

Verdict

The Hidden Valley Of The Picos

If the Picos de Europa are the limestone gods of northern Spain, then Liebana is the hidden valley beneath them: a place where riders descend ancient mountain paths through forests, canyons and villages while the great walls dominate the horizon above.
