The Riding

Tramuntana / Sóller is Mallorca at its most dramatic: limestone mountains, ancient stone tracks, olive terraces, coastal exposure and deep cultural scenery. The riding is beautiful, but rarely casual. This basecamp suits riders who value landscape, technical terrain and the feeling of moving through an old mountain world rather than chasing pure bike-park speed.

Ride character

Limestone mountains, stone paths, coastal exposure, ancient terraces, olive groves, dry switchbacks and dramatic sea-to-mountain scenery.

Typical ride day

20-45 km / 700-1,600 m+ / 3-6 hours

Technical level

Intermediate+ to advanced / approx. S2-S4

Medium-high. Climbs can be steep, surfaces rough and descents technical.

Why Ride Tramuntana / Sóller?

The Mediterranean Mountain Adventure

The Serra de Tramuntana is one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Europe. Stretching along the northwest coast of Mallorca, this UNESCO World Heritage mountain range rises dramatically from the Mediterranean Sea, creating a landscape of towering limestone peaks, deep valleys, ancient stone terraces and coastal cliffs. For mountain bikers, the Tramuntana offers something entirely unique. Unlike mainland destinations built around enduro centres or bike parks, the riding here follows ancient stone paths, mule tracks and centuries-old mountain routes connecting villages that have existed for generations. The terrain is rugged, the trails are technical and the scenery is unforgettable. Every ride feels like a journey through history: one moment you are climbing through olive groves and stone terraces, the next you are navigating medieval switchbacks high above the Mediterranean.

  • UNESCO World Heritage mountain landscape
  • Ancient stone paths, mule tracks and historic village routes
  • Limestone peaks, coastal cliffs and Mediterranean panoramas
  • One of Europe's most scenic and technical MTB destinations

Basecamp

Sóller - The Valley Of Riders

Sóller is the undisputed mountain biking capital of the Tramuntana. Hidden inside a fertile valley surrounded by mountains, orange groves and limestone peaks, it provides direct access to the region's best trails while maintaining an authentic Mallorcan atmosphere. This is where riders stay, where guides operate and where the island's mountain biking community gathers. Unlike many coastal resorts, Sóller feels like a true mountain town: relaxed, authentic and full of historic architecture, local cafés, bike-friendly hotels and excellent restaurants. Most importantly, riders can pedal directly from their accommodation to many of the region's signature routes. No transfers, no shuttles, just mountains.

  • Sóller: the best basecamp for 90% of riders
  • Direct access to Cúber, Pas de l'Ofre and Barranc de Biniaraix routes
  • Port de Sóller: coastal alternative with sea views and beachside hotels
  • Bunyola / Alaró: local technical trails and benchmark descents

Signature Rides

The Best Of Tramuntana / Sóller

The strongest Tramuntana trips combine one high-mountain hero day with coastal odysseys, historic village links and technical local descents. The rides are not defined by speed alone; they are defined by scenery, route craft and the feeling of moving through Mallorca's mountain history.

  • Cúber Reservoir to Sóller: 25-35 km, 1,000-1,300 m climbing, advanced, the defining ride
  • Camí de Sa Costera: dramatic cliffside mountain-to-sea route
  • Trans Tramuntana: long-distance island mountain crossing
  • Alaró Castle to Orient: technical enduro benchmark with slabs and switchbacks
  • Camí de Castelló: historic flow trail linking Sóller and Deià

Hero Ride

Cúber Reservoir To Sóller - Via Pas De L'Ofre & Barranc De Biniaraix

This is the ride that defines Mallorca's mountain soul. Starting high near the Cúber Reservoir beneath Puig Major, the route traverses open high terrain before tackling the iconic Pas de l'Ofre pass. The descent that follows is unforgettable: ancient stone switchbacks, massive limestone steps, technical trialera, the dramatic Barranc de Biniaraix and finally the orange groves and streets of Sóller below. This is not simply a mountain bike ride. It is one of the great mountain adventures of the Mediterranean.

  • 25-35 km depending on route options
  • 1,000-1,300 m+ climbing
  • 4-6 hours riding time
  • Advanced difficulty
  • Cúber Reservoir, Pas de l'Ofre, Barranc de Biniaraix and Sóller finish

Ride Character

Ancient • Technical • Mediterranean

Expect limestone rock, ancient stone paths, technical switchbacks, trialera riding, hike-a-bike sections, coastal exposure, mountain passes and historic villages. Tramuntana is one of the most technically unique riding destinations in Europe. It rewards balance, patience, tyre choice, climbing legs and a taste for adventure. The trails are beautiful, but they are rarely easy.

The Four Faces

Sóller, Puig Major & Cúber, Deià & The Coast, Bunyola / Alaró

Tramuntana becomes clearer through four riding worlds. Sóller is the Valley of Riders and the cultural and logistical heart of the region. Puig Major and Cúber form the high mountain backbone, with alpine landscapes, remote passes and the island's most iconic adventure routes. Deià and the coast deliver the Mediterranean edge: cliffside trails, sea views and village charm. Bunyola and Alaró create the southern playground, with dense forests, local favourites and technical benchmark descents such as Alaró Castle.

  • Sóller: the valley of riders
  • Puig Major & Cúber: the high mountains
  • Deià & the coast: the Mediterranean edge
  • Bunyola / Alaró: the southern playground

Scenery

Mountains Above The Mediterranean

The scenery is why many riders fall in love with Tramuntana. Coastal cliffs, limestone peaks, deep valleys, olive terraces, orange groves, historic villages and Mediterranean panoramas appear again and again. Few destinations combine mountains and sea so dramatically. A normal ride can move from dry-stone terraces to high passes, then drop toward sea views and finish in a valley full of citrus trees.

Best Season

October To May

Autumn brings warm temperatures, quieter villages and excellent trail conditions. Winter is often perfect for riding, with mild weather and low visitor pressure, though mountain weather can still change quickly. Spring is the island at its most beautiful, with wildflowers, clear skies and ideal temperatures. Summer is possible, but hot and busy; early starts, water planning and sensitivity around shared paths are essential.

How We Build It

Mountain Adventure With Island Recovery

Tramuntana works best as an adventure destination. EpicBikeTrails itineraries combine signature mountain routes, coastal trails, historic villages, Mediterranean gastronomy, E-MTB exploration and boutique accommodation. The rhythm is deeply Mallorcan: ride through the mountains during the day, swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon and enjoy local cuisine in Sóller in the evening. This is mountain biking with a strong sense of place.

  • Best as a 5-7 day October-May island basecamp
  • Guided or locally supported for the most technical ancient routes
  • E-MTB works well for linking valleys, passes and viewpoints
  • Pairs naturally with Pollenca / Alcudia or Llevant / Artà

Who It Is For

Adventure Riders, Scenic Seekers And Strong Climbers

Tramuntana / Sóller is perfect for adventure riders, enduro riders, E-MTB riders, scenic seekers, strong climbers, multi-day explorers and riders looking for something different. It is less suitable for bike park riders, gravity-only riders, complete beginners or anyone looking mainly for groomed trails. The riding is beautiful, but it demands respect.

  • Perfect for: adventure riders, enduro riders and E-MTB riders
  • Perfect for: scenic seekers, strong climbers and multi-day explorers
  • Less suitable for: beginners and bike park riders
  • Less suitable for: gravity-only riders and groomed-trail seekers

Basecamp DNA

Why We Selected It

Because No Other Island Basecamp Feels Like This

We selected Tramuntana / Sóller because nowhere else in Europe combines Mediterranean scenery, UNESCO mountain landscapes and ancient stone-path riding quite like this. It brings the EpicBikeTrails collection a destination that is scenic, technical, cultural and unmistakably Mallorcan.

Verdict

The Mediterranean Mountain Adventure

If Eremua is the Forest Spirit and Sierra de Guara the Rock Cathedrals, then Tramuntana is The Mediterranean Mountain Adventure: a place where mountains, history and sea combine into one unforgettable riding experience.
