Push Horizons!

The Riding

Sierra de Guara is The Canyon Kingdom: one of Europe's last great limestone wildernesses, where water, stone and time carved a labyrinth of vertical walls, hidden valleys and natural fortresses. Villages disappeared, farms emptied and roads stopped, but the old mule tracks, shepherd paths and medieval routes remained. Today those trails form the backbone of a raw Pre-Pyrenean riding landscape based around Alquezar and the B-Guara mountain bike network.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

B-Guara / Sierra de Guara is canyon-country riding: limestone, gorges, old paths, dry ridges and remote village links. It is less famous than Ainsa but highly valuable for riders who want natural terrain, quiet landscapes and a strong sense of exploration.

Best season

March-June / September-November

Caution season

Summer heat can be severe in canyon country. Heavy rain can affect barrancos, river crossings and exposed rock sections.

Ride character

Canyon landscapes, limestone ridges, dry singletrack, old paths, river gorges, Mediterranean-Pyrenean transition terrain and remote village links.

Typical ride day

25-55 km / 700-1,600 m+ / 4-7 hours

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced / approx. S2-S4

Fitness demand

Medium-high. Distances, heat, dry climbs and remote terrain require good pacing.

Best bike

Trail or enduro MTB. eMTB very suitable for longer canyon-country loops.

eMTB suitability

Very good - especially for linking villages, ridges and longer dry-route days.

Guide logic

Recommended for first visit, canyon route choices, remote sections and weather-sensitive planning.

Shuttle usefulness

Useful in selected cases, but the area works strongly through loop logic and eMTB route craft.

Weather logic

Heat, storms and canyon conditions matter. Avoid peak summer and treat water planning seriously.

Best for

  • Adventure trail riders
  • eMTB groups
  • Riders who want canyon landscapes
  • Natural trail and old-path riders
  • Groups looking for a less obvious Aragon basecamp

Not ideal for

  • Beginners
  • Riders wanting lift-access riding
  • Groups avoiding dry exposed terrain
  • Riders looking for dense bike-park style trail networks

Why Ride Sierra de Guara?

Where Trails Outlived The Villages

Some mountain bike destinations are defined by mountains. Guara is defined by canyons. The rivers Vero, Alcanadre, Balced and Mascun have cut deep chasms through the limestone, leaving a landscape of walls, ledges, abandoned settlements and silent valleys. This is not a bike park. It is exploration: vultures above, rock below, ghost villages in the forest and whole days that feel far removed from modern Spain.

  • Archetype: The Canyon Kingdom
  • Basecamp: Alquezar, the stone capital above the Rio Vero
  • Official B-Guara network as the mountain bike centre of Sierra de Guara
  • A flagship for limestone gravity, wilderness, culture and canyon scale

Basecamp

Alquezar: The Stone Capital

Alquezar is the best operational and emotional basecamp for Sierra de Guara. Perched directly above the Rio Vero canyon, it combines dramatic stone streets, premium rider accommodation, restaurants, guiding, bike rental access and Somontano wine culture with direct links toward Gran Vuelta al Vero, Puerta de Guara, Mascun, Rodellar, Bierge and the southern B-Guara network.

  • Basecamp archetype: the Stone Capital
  • Direct access to the strongest southern Guara riding zones
  • Alternative basecamp: Bierge, the quieter river gate
  • Post-ride ritual: canyon terraces, Somontano wine, ternasco and olive oil

At A Glance

Limestone Canyons, B-Guara And Vulture Country

Guara is a destination of stone, silence and depth. It brings together medieval Alquezar, the official B-Guara network, Rio Vero and Alcanadre canyons, ghost villages, Salto de Roldan legends and one of Europe's most memorable Griffon vulture landscapes.

  • Sierra de Guara Natural Park
  • Official B-Guara MTB network
  • Medieval Alquezar
  • Rio Vero, Alcanadre and Mascun canyons
  • Ghost village trail network
  • Exceptional E-MTB destination
  • Somontano wine country
  • April to November riding window

Signature Rides

The Five Rides That Define Guara

The signature rides explain the full kingdom: the long Vero crossing, the Mascun canyon cathedral, the forest frontier, the western crest and the compact stone gateway.

  • Gran Vuelta al Vero: the backbone of the kingdom
  • Catedrales de Roca: the canyon cathedral
  • Guara Cinco Estrellas: the forest frontier
  • Monrepos Xtrem: the western crest
  • Puerta de Guara: the stone gateway

Hero Ride

Gran Vuelta al Vero: The Ride That Defines Guara

Gran Vuelta al Vero is a full-day crossing of the Canyon Kingdom. The route links the Rio Vero basin with sandstone ridges, ancient pathways, technical limestone descents and some of the most spectacular viewpoints in Aragon. Stone shelves, river crossings, rock gardens and old paths make every kilometre feel earned.

  • Distance: 44 km
  • Climbing: 1,340 m
  • Difficulty: expert / black diamond
  • Ride type: wilderness enduro expedition

The Defining Reveal

Mascun Canyon: The Canyon Cathedral

Every flagship destination has a moment. Guara has Mascun. The trail climbs through pine forest and silent valleys until the edge suddenly opens. Limestone towers erupt from the earth, the river cuts hundreds of metres below and Griffon vultures glide at eye level. This is the image riders take home.

  • A natural cathedral of limestone walls and towers
  • One of the most powerful reveal moments in the Spanish Pre-Pyrenees
  • Canyon scale, silence and vulture flight define the atmosphere
  • The place where Guara becomes unforgettable

Ride Character

Limestone Gravity

The riding is natural, technical and uncompromising. Expect limestone ledges, sandstone slabs, loose rock, ancient stone paths, riverbed crossings, exposure and trial-style line choice. Guara rewards mountain awareness, precise braking and riders who enjoy geology shaping the trail.

  • Limestone ledges, rock shelves and loose natural surfaces
  • Ancient mule tracks and medieval pathways
  • Technical descents rather than groomed flow
  • E-MTB range helps unlock bigger canyon combinations

The Four Faces

Alquezar, Mascun, Nocito And Bierge

Guara becomes clear through four faces. Alquezar is the stone capital and logistics hub. Mascun is the canyon cathedral. Nocito is the wild northern forest frontier. Bierge is the river gate where canyons, crossings and wilderness routes converge.

  • Alquezar: the stone capital
  • Mascun: the canyon cathedral
  • Nocito: the forest frontier
  • Bierge: the river gate

Scenery

Ghost Villages, Vultures And The River Kingdom

The scenery is ruled by water and stone. Abandoned places such as Otin, Nasarre and Miz give the trails emotional weight, while Griffon vultures cast moving shadows across the canyon walls. Salto de Roldan adds myth, and the rivers Vero, Alcanadre, Mascun and Balced remain the architects of the whole destination.

  • Primary natural force: rivers carving limestone canyon systems
  • Cultural identity: ghost villages, medieval paths and Salto de Roldan legend
  • Terrain identity: limestone, sandstone, riverbeds and forest singletrack
  • Food ritual: Somontano wine, ternasco and Aragon olive oil

Best Season

April To November

April to November is the main Guara window. Spring brings green landscapes and flowing rivers. Summer can work with careful timing and canyon-aware planning. Autumn is often the best overall season, with cooler temperatures and golden light. Winter can be rideable in southern sectors when conditions allow.

How We Build It

Canyon Days From Alquezar

We build Guara as a destination of exploration from Alquezar, using the B-Guara network and local knowledge to link Gran Vuelta al Vero, Mascun, Rodellar, Bierge, Nocito and the southern canyon sectors. The best trips combine riding by day with stone-village evenings and Somontano food culture.

  • Available as a flexible 3-8-day Pre-Pyrenean canyon Basecamp
  • Self-guided options for clear B-Guara route days
  • Guided support for hidden links, weather calls and bigger wilderness objectives
  • Pairs naturally with Los Mallos, Ainsa, Ordesa or Maestrazgo

Who It Is For

For Riders Seeking The Wild Canyon Side Of Aragon

Guara is perfect for enduro riders, E-MTB riders, adventure riders, scenic seekers, wilderness explorers and multi-day groups seeking authenticity. It is less suitable for beginners, bike-park riders, resort holidays or riders looking for groomed flow trails.

  • Perfect for: enduro, E-MTB, adventure and wilderness riders
  • Perfect for: riders who value scenery, silence and cultural depth
  • Less suitable for: bike-park riders and complete beginners
  • Less suitable for: groomed-flow and resort-based holidays

Basecamp DNA

Adventure, Wilderness And Canyon Scale

Guara scores highest for adventure, scenic value, wilderness, cultural depth, exploration and E-MTB potential. Enduro and technical challenge are strong; flow and family suitability are lower because the best riding is natural, rocky and mountain-led.

  • Adventure 5/5
  • Scenic Value 5/5
  • Wilderness 5/5
  • Cultural Depth 5/5
  • Exploration 5/5
  • E-MTB Friendly 5/5
  • Enduro Riding 4/5
  • Technical Challenge 4/5
  • Flow Riding 3/5
  • Family Friendly 2/5

Why We Selected It

The Canyon Kingdom Of The Collection

We selected Sierra de Guara because nowhere else in Spain combines medieval villages, immense limestone canyon systems, ancient pathways, Griffon vultures and wilderness riding on this scale. It is one of Europe's great hidden mountain bike destinations.

Verdict

The Canyon Kingdom

If Maestrazgo is The Forgotten Kingdom and Ordesa is The Cathedral of the Pyrenees, then Sierra de Guara is The Canyon Kingdom: a place where rivers carved the mountains, villages disappeared and the trails remained.
