Push Horizons!

The Riding

Sierra Espuña is one of Spain's most surprising mountain-bike destinations: a protected mountain island of pine forests, limestone ridges, hidden valleys and badlands rising above Murcia's dry southern landscapes.

Basecamp decision logic

Ride Intelligence

Use this as the quick-fit logic for season, bike setup, group level and how much support your trip needs.

Best season

October-April

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced / approx. S2-S4 depending on route choice

Best bike

Trail MTB, light enduro or eMTB. Gravel may fit selected easier loops but not the technical core.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Sierra Espuna is a strong winter and shoulder-season inland basecamp: dry Mediterranean mountains, pine forests, long loops and a more remote Murcia feel. It rewards riders who like sustained days, route craft and quiet backcountry more than resort-style riding.

Best season

October-April

Caution season

Summer heat can be severe. Dry conditions, exposure and water planning matter in warmer months.

Ride character

Mediterranean mountain trails, pine forest, dry ridges, rocky descents, Espubike-style loops, remote valleys and Murcia backcountry.

Typical ride day

25-55 km / 700-1,600 m+ / 4-7 hours

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced / approx. S2-S4 depending on route choice

Fitness demand

Medium-high. Long loops, dry climbs and remote sections require good pacing.

Best bike

Trail MTB, light enduro or eMTB. Gravel may fit selected easier loops but not the technical core.

eMTB suitability

Very good - especially for longer Espuna loops and repeated climbing days.

Guide logic

Recommended for first visit, remote loops, technical descents and seasonal route decisions.

Shuttle usefulness

Useful in selected cases, but many rides work as pedal-access or eMTB loops.

Weather logic

Dry mountain conditions dominate. Avoid peak heat, plan water carefully and adapt route length to temperature.

Best for

  • Winter and shoulder-season riders
  • eMTB groups
  • Long-loop trail riders
  • Riders wanting Mediterranean mountains without coastal crowds
  • Adventure riders who like dry backcountry terrain

Not ideal for

  • Beginners on technical routes
  • Riders wanting lift access
  • Groups seeking lush green landscapes
  • Peak-summer riders without heat planning

Why Ride Sierra Espuña?

The Explorer's Mountain

Known as the Green Lung of Murcia, Sierra Espuña is surrounded by semi-arid landscapes, agricultural plains and Mediterranean coastlines, yet inside the massif riders find pine forests, limestone mountains, panoramic ridges, hidden valleys and hundreds of kilometres of rideable terrain. This is not a destination built around one famous trail. It is built around exploration.

  • Sierra Espuña Regional Park in the Murcia Region
  • Maximum elevation: 1,583 m at Morrón de Espuña
  • Espubike MTB Circuit: 146 km across four official stages
  • One of mainland Spain's best year-round MTB destinations

Why It Matters

Reliable Riding When Other Mountains Sleep

When the Alps are snowed in, the Pyrenees are cold and Northern Europe is wet, Sierra Espuña is often still riding. That makes it one of the most valuable winter and shoulder-season destinations in the Epic collection.

  • Trailforks lists 370+ mapped trails in the region
  • Komoot MTB community rating around 4.6/5
  • 1,000+ recorded MTB riders on Komoot
  • 100+ outdoor routes throughout the territory

Flagship Identity

Murcia's Green Mountain Heart

Sierra Espuña becomes a flagship because it offers something rare in southern Spain: a green mountain island with year-round potential, forest riding, limestone ridges, badlands, villages and a recognised multi-stage MTB backbone in Espubike. It is not the highest, hardest or most famous destination. Its value is dependable discovery.

  • A flagship for winter and shoulder-season exploration
  • A clear alternative to Sierra Nevada altitude and Málaga access
  • Espubike gives the basecamp a multi-day route spine
  • Strong for riders who want landscapes to change every day

Ride Character

Built For Exploration

Sierra Espuña is not a bike park, not pure enduro and not an alpine destination. Instead it offers something increasingly rare: freedom to explore. The riding combines mountain tracks, natural singletrack, ridgeline traverses, forest descents and remote connections between villages, viewpoints and historical landmarks.

  • Rocky Mediterranean singletrack
  • Long mountain loops and forest roads
  • Limestone ridgelines and scenic traverses
  • Excellent E-MTB terrain with endless route combinations

What Makes It Different?

Discovery Over Fame

Where Sierra Nevada is about altitude, Málaga is about accessibility and the Alpujarras are about culture, Sierra Espuña is about discovery. It rewards riders who enjoy finding hidden corners, forgotten trails and landscapes that change around every bend.

Hero Ride

Espubike - The Ultimate Exploration Route

If one route captures the spirit of Sierra Espuña, it is Espubike. This 146 km mountain-bike circuit circles the entire mountain range, linking forests, villages, ridgelines, viewpoints and some of Murcia's most iconic landscapes. Divided into four stages, it turns Sierra Espuña into a true multi-day MTB destination.

  • Stage 1: El Berro to Gebas and the spectacular Badlands
  • Stage 2: Gebas to Casas Nuevas through remote valleys
  • Stage 3: Casas Nuevas to Las Alquerías in the heart of the park
  • Stage 4: Las Alquerías to El Berro via classic mountain terrain

The Four Faces

Forests, Ridges, Badlands And Villages

Sierra Espuña's depth comes from contrast. Pine forests create shade and grip. Limestone ridges bring views and mountain feel. Gebas Badlands add a landscape that feels almost lunar. Villages, snow wells and reforestation history give the rides cultural texture rather than just kilometres.

  • Forests: pine cover, shade and natural trails
  • Ridges: limestone viewpoints and mountain traverses
  • Badlands: Gebas and the Murcian Moon Landscape
  • Villages: rural food, history and Espubike stage structure

Must-Ride Areas

Hidden Corners Of The Massif

Beyond Espubike, Sierra Espuña opens into a web of ridges, valleys and forest trails. The best days often connect several areas into one bigger story.

  • Valle de Leiva and Paredes de Leiva
  • Morrón de Espuña and Pedro López
  • Collado Bermejo and Collado Mangueta
  • La Perdiz, Senda del Dinosaurio and the Barrancos de Gebas

Scenery

Forest, Mountain And Desert In A Single Ride

Few destinations in Spain combine such contrasting landscapes. Dense pine forests cover the upper slopes, limestone ridges rise above deep ravines, ancient snow wells sit near mountain summits, and just beyond the mountains lie the surreal Gebas Badlands.

  • Morrón de Espuña
  • Gebas Badlands, known as the Murcian Moon Landscape
  • Pozos de la Nieve snow wells
  • Panoramic Mediterranean viewpoints

History & Culture

A Landscape Rebuilt By Vision

Sierra Espuña's forests are not accidental. At the end of the nineteenth century, forestry engineer Ricardo Codorníu led one of Spain's most ambitious reforestation projects, transforming degraded terrain into the forested landscape riders enjoy today.

  • Ricardo Codorníu reforestation project
  • Traditional mountain villages
  • Historic agricultural terraces
  • Ancient mountain routes and Murcian rural culture

Best Season

One Of Spain's Best Year-Round MTB Destinations

This is Sierra Espuña's superpower. October to May is the prime riding season, with March, April, May, October and November especially strong. Winter is excellent, with cool temperatures, green landscapes and reliable conditions. Summer is possible, but early starts and careful route selection are essential.

  • October-May: prime riding season
  • March-May: green landscapes and ideal temperatures
  • October-November: dry trails and cooler days
  • Summer: possible but heat-sensitive

How We Build It

Discovery Over Difficulty

Our goal in Sierra Espuña is not to chase the hardest trail. It is to build the best riding experience. A great trip should combine forest riding, viewpoints, technical trails, village culture, mountain landscapes, local gastronomy and hidden corners of the region.

  • Use Espubike as the backbone
  • Build progressive route difficulty
  • Add technical trail options where appropriate
  • Adapt routes to season, temperature and E-MTB range

Who It Is For

The Winter Sun Explorer

Sierra Espuña is for riders who enjoy discovering places. Not every rider wants bike parks or extreme enduro. Some riders simply want great mountain biking in beautiful landscapes, good weather and enough variety to keep every day fresh.

  • Intermediate and strong intermediate riders
  • E-MTB riders and adventure riders
  • Multi-day MTB travellers and winter sun seekers
  • Gravel and MTB crossover riders who value exploration

Southern Spain Comparison

Choose It For Exploration

Use southern Spain as a simple rider decision system: Sierra Nevada for altitude and challenge, Málaga for winter sun and flexible trail days, the Alpujarras for culture and white villages, and Sierra Espuña for exploration, year-round riding, Espubike and the unique contrast of forests, mountains and badlands.

Epic Takeaway

The Best Destinations Are Not Always The Most Famous.

Sierra Espuña rewards curiosity. Ride through forests planted more than a century ago, cross limestone ridges above Mediterranean valleys, explore hidden mountain villages and the spectacular Gebas Badlands. This is Murcia's green mountain heart, built around the joy of discovery. Sierra Espuña is the Explorer's Mountain.
