Push Horizons!

The Riding

The Alpujarras is for riders who want more than trails. Hidden on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada, it is one of Europe's most distinctive mountain biking destinations: ancient Moorish mule tracks, white mountain villages, huge vertical descents, Mediterranean views and a trail network shaped by centuries of mountain life rather than modern bike-park design.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

The Alpujarras are one of Spain's most culturally powerful MTB landscapes: white villages, ancient mule tracks, Moorish terraces and huge mountain-to-valley riding below Sierra Nevada. This is a destination for riders who want history, vertical and raw trail character in the same week.

Best season

March-June / September-November

Caution season

Summer heat can be severe at lower elevations, while high Sierra Nevada weather can change quickly. Winter snow affects upper routes.

Ride character

Ancient mule tracks, white villages, Moorish terraces, huge vertical, dry technical descents, high-mountain backdrops and deep cultural landscapes.

Typical ride day

25-55 km / 900-1,900 m+ / 4-7 hours

Technical level

Intermediate+ to advanced / approx. S2-S4+

Fitness demand

High. Expect long climbs, big descents, rough historic trails and serious elevation changes.

Best bike

Trail or enduro MTB. eMTB highly suitable for climbing-heavy ride weeks.

eMTB suitability

Excellent - eMTBs make the vertical and village-to-village linking much more flexible.

Guide logic

Recommended for first visit, old path networks, big descents, remote trails and season-sensitive route choices.

Shuttle usefulness

Very useful for bigger vertical days, but eMTBs also unlock strong self-powered options.

Weather logic

Altitude, heat and exposure matter. Route choice should adapt to snowline, heat, storms and water availability.

Best for

  • Strong mountain riders
  • eMTB groups
  • Riders who want culture and technical terrain
  • Ancient mule-track and village-to-village riders
  • Groups looking for a big Andalucia mountain experience

Not ideal for

  • Beginners
  • Riders seeking smooth flow trails only
  • Groups avoiding long climbs or rough surfaces
  • Peak-summer riders without heat planning

Why Ride The Alpujarras?

Ancient Trails Beneath Mainland Spain's Highest Peaks

Most famous MTB destinations were built for mountain bikes. The Alpujarras was not. Its trails were created to connect isolated mountain communities hidden deep within the folds of Sierra Nevada. Today those same paths form one of Spain's most authentic riding networks, with huge elevation, technical natural terrain, spectacular scenery and a cultural identity found nowhere else in Europe.

  • Ancient Moorish mule tracks and historic village links
  • White villages including Pampaneira, Bubion, Capileira and Trevelez
  • Riding beneath Mulhacen at 3,479 m and Veleta at 3,398 m
  • Descents exceeding 2,000 vertical metres on the biggest days
  • A living mountain culture that happens to be extraordinary on a bike

Flagship Identity

The Authentic Explorer

The Alpujarras adds something different to the Epic Bike Trails portfolio. It is not the pure enduro fame of Ainsa or the winter efficiency of Costa Blanca. It is a ride through a living mountain kingdom: high Sierra Nevada terrain, white villages, acequias, ancient terraces, Mediterranean horizons and trails older than the bicycle itself.

  • 450 km Transnevada route context around Sierra Nevada
  • 60+ mapped MTB trails across the wider area
  • 500-year-old trail network shaped by mountain communities
  • Natural enduro, all-mountain and adventure riding
  • Mediterranean and North African views on exceptional clear days

Ride Character

Continuous Descents. Natural Terrain. Real Adventure.

The Alpujarras is defined by continuous descents rather than isolated trails. Local riders talk about link-ups: connecting whole mountain sectors into huge rides that descend through alpine slate, forest singletrack, ancient mule tracks, cobbled village lanes and terraced valleys in a single run.

  • Natural enduro and all-mountain riding
  • Descents regularly exceeding 1,000 m vertical
  • Big mountain adventure routes with changing terrain
  • Rocky, varied and highly rewarding surfaces
  • E-MTB friendly for larger mountain loops and bigger vertical

Signature Ride

The Mega Link-Up Featuring Jardin Secreto

If one ride captures the Alpujarras, it is the Mega Link-Up. Starting high on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada, often above 2,500 metres, the route connects alpine ridgelines, natural enduro trails and historic village paths into one long descent. At its heart sits Jardin Secreto, the trail many riders remember long after the trip ends.

  • More than 2,000 m potential vertical descent
  • High alpine start above 2,500 m
  • Multiple ecosystems in a single ride
  • Legendary Jardin Secreto sector
  • Finish among white villages such as Capileira and Bubion

Jardin Secreto

The Trail Riders Remember

The upper mountain can feel almost lunar: loose slate, exposed ridgelines and vast alpine views toward the highest peaks in mainland Spain. Then the route dives into oak woodland and Mediterranean pine forest. The terrain becomes faster, smoother and more playful, with natural berms, hidden compressions and flowing corners dropping deeper into the valley.

  • Fast, flowing natural singletrack
  • Around 1,000 vertical metres can be linked through the sector
  • A dramatic transition from alpine terrain to forest riding
  • Natural enduro rather than manufactured trail-centre flow
  • A defining Alpujarras memory for strong riders

Trail Network

The Best Trails In The Alpujarras

The trail network combines ancient village connections, natural enduro lines and purpose-shaped descending sectors developed by local riders over many years. The best days often link several of them together rather than treating trails as isolated hits.

  • Jardin Secreto: the defining fast-flowing mountain sector
  • Rio Bermejo: steep, popular and relentless
  • Piedra Ventana: scenic singletrack with excellent rhythm
  • Jabali: technical drops, rock faces and natural features
  • Barranco de la Sangre and No Te Salgas en las Curvas for stronger riders

What Makes It Different?

Riding Through A Living Mountain Culture

Following the fall of Granada, Moorish communities retreated into these mountains and built an isolated world on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada. To connect villages, farms and settlements, they carved paths into the landscape. Ancient acequias still carry snowmelt across the mountains. White villages still hold a Berber-influenced character rarely found elsewhere in Europe. You are not simply riding trails. You are riding history.

  • Moorish heritage and Berber-influenced white villages
  • Ancient acequia irrigation systems across the slopes
  • Village paths, farm tracks and old trading routes
  • Traditional mountain life still visible in the landscape
  • A cultural MTB experience as much as a trail destination

Scenery

From Alpine Peaks To The Mediterranean

Few destinations in Europe offer such dramatic contrast. A single ride can begin high among alpine ridgelines beneath snow-capped peaks and finish among olive groves, white villages and viewpoints toward the Mediterranean Sea. Deep ravines cut through the mountains, ancient terraces trace the contours, and on exceptional days North Africa appears on the horizon.

  • Sierra Nevada National Park landscapes
  • Mulhacen and Veleta dominating the skyline
  • Poqueira Gorge villages and deep mountain valleys
  • Mediterranean viewpoints and Costa Tropical links
  • Ancient terraces, ravines and irrigation systems

Best Season

April To June / September To November

Spring and autumn deliver the best combination of temperatures, trail conditions and mountain access. Spring brings green valleys, flowing water and comfortable riding temperatures. Autumn provides stable weather, cooler air and some of the best riding conditions of the year. Summer remains strong at altitude but requires careful route planning in lower valleys.

  • Prime spring riding: April to June
  • Premium autumn riding: September to November
  • Summer best at higher elevations
  • Winter possible on lower routes
  • Route selection depends heavily on elevation and weather

How We Build It

Riding Through A Living Landscape

The Alpujarras is not about maximising trail kilometres. It is about experiencing the mountains properly. We build routes around village locations, elevation profiles, weather windows and rider ability, combining exceptional riding with the scenery, culture and authenticity that define the region.

  • Village-based riding experiences
  • Routes matched to altitude, season and weather
  • E-MTB options for larger mountain days
  • Signature descents such as the Mega Link-Up
  • Access-aware planning in protected landscapes
  • Authentic accommodation and local food experiences

Who It Is For

Riders Who Want More Than Trails

Choose the Alpujarras if your ideal MTB trip combines riding, scenery, culture and exploration. This is a destination for riders who value natural trails, mountain environments and authentic local experiences. It rewards curiosity as much as fitness.

  • Natural enduro riders and all-mountain riders
  • E-MTB explorers seeking big mountain loops
  • Adventure riders and scenic riders
  • Culture, history and food lovers
  • Intermediate and advanced riders comfortable on natural terrain

Less Suitable For

Not A Bike Park Or Jump Holiday

The Alpujarras is less suitable for complete beginners, bike-park specialists, uplift-only riders or groups looking primarily for jumps and man-made features. The terrain is natural, physical and sometimes rough. That honesty is the point, but it needs the right rider mindset.

  • Not ideal for complete beginners
  • Not a lift-served gravity basecamp
  • Not focused on jumps or machine-built flow
  • Best for riders who enjoy route-finding, culture and changing terrain
  • Better with route support and altitude-aware planning

Epic Takeaway

Ride Through A Living Mountain Kingdom

Many destinations have smoother trails. Many have bigger bike parks. Many have more infrastructure. Very few have a soul. If Sierra Nevada is the Alpine Challenger and Malaga is the Winter Rider, Alpujarras is the Authentic Explorer: a place where mountain biking becomes a journey through one of Europe's last living mountain cultures.
