Push Horizons!

The Riding

Llevant / Arta is the Epic Terrain System pilot for Mallorca: a raw maritime tech-enduro sanctuary where limestone ridges, pine forests, dry torrents and coastal exposure combine into one of the most distinctive winter-capable MTB systems in Europe. This is not a bike park, polished flow zone or resort-cycling product. It is sea-level riding with alpine-level consequence.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Llevant / Arta is Mallorca's raw eastern edge: limestone, coves, pine forest, exposed coastal lines and a quieter Mediterranean feel. It is a strong counterpoint to the classic Tramuntana story and works best for riders who want technical natural terrain with a wild coastal atmosphere.

Best season

October-May

Caution season

Summer heat and dry exposure can be demanding. Coastal and natural-area access should be respected carefully.

Ride character

Raw limestone coastal riding, dry singletrack, exposed ridges, pine forest, Mediterranean coves, rocky paths and remote eastern Mallorca terrain.

Typical ride day

25-45 km / 600-1,300 m+ / 3-6 hours

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced / approx. S2-S4

Fitness demand

Medium-high. Climbs are not huge by Pyrenees standards, but rough surfaces, exposure and heat can make days demanding.

Best bike

Trail MTB or light enduro. eMTB suitable for linking longer loops and mixed terrain.

eMTB suitability

Good - especially for linking Arta, coastal ridges and inland forest systems.

Guide logic

Recommended for technical coastal routes, access-sensitive areas, exposure management and first-time visitors.

Shuttle usefulness

Usually limited. The destination works best through hub-and-spoke loops and smart route linking.

Weather logic

Best from October to May. Avoid peak heat and be careful on rocky limestone after rain or in strong wind near exposed coastlines.

Best for

  • Raw Mediterranean trail riders
  • Scenic technical riders
  • eMTB groups wanting coastal wilderness
  • Riders looking for a quieter Mallorca alternative
  • Groups who value landscape, coves and natural terrain

Not ideal for

  • Beginners
  • Riders wanting groomed flow trails
  • Pure gravity/shuttle groups
  • Groups uncomfortable with rough limestone or coastal exposure

ETS Destination Claim

The Raw Maritime Tech-Enduro System

Llevant / Arta exists to define a specific riding archetype inside the Epic Bike Trails portfolio: sea-level technical enduro, exposed coastal ridge systems and expedition-style route logic. It is the raw maritime counterweight to alpine flow systems, bike parks and groomed trail centres.

  • Sea-level technical enduro with real consequence
  • Exposed coastal ridge systems and Mediterranean wilderness
  • Natural terrain where line choice matters more than speed
  • A pilot for the Epic Terrain System approach

Why Ride Llevant / Arta?

The Lost Mediterranean

Drop into Mallorca's last great coastal wilderness: a raw landscape of razor-sharp limestone, ancient watchtowers, technical sea-cliff singletrack and remote coves untouched by mass-tourism infrastructure. Llevant proves another Mallorca exists: silent, rugged, exposed and deeply wild.

  • 100% unsanitized gravity instead of machine-built berms
  • Winter sanctuary when alpine systems are snowbound
  • The anti-cliche Mallorca beyond resorts and road-cycling brochures
  • Mediterranean terrain that demands precision and preparation

Quick Ride Decision Guide

Choose The Right System

Each Llevant riding experience belongs to a distinct terrain system. Good route design means choosing the correct system for the group's ability, weather, heat exposure and technical appetite.

  • Exposure and cliff drops: Es Canons, System IV Remote Peninsula Enduro Zone
  • Full-day wilderness epic: Cap de Ferrutx Spine, multi-system traverse
  • Fast flow and forest cover: Sa Duaia Matrix, System II Interior Forest Network
  • Recovery or coastal spin: Cala Ratjada Loops, System III Dry Canyon and Coastal Links
  • Group split-routing: Coll des Pescadors connector corridor

Hero Ride

Cap de Ferrutx Coastal Enduro Spine

The defining Llevant ride starts from the stone streets of Arta, climbs through interior hills, strikes the high spine of the Llevant Natural Park, traverses toward Ermita de Betlem and reaches its emotional climax on the brutal Es Canons descent. The trail drops into limestone steps suspended above Mediterranean blue, then returns through wild coastal connectors and remote coves.

  • Distance: 42 km
  • Vertical gain / loss: +1,250 m / -1,250 m
  • Target time: 4.5 to 6 hours
  • Difficulty: advanced / expert, STS S2-S4
  • Best bike: enduro or e-MTB
  • Best season: October to May
  • Start / finish: Arta

Ride Arc

From Inland Activation To Coastal Recovery

The Cap de Ferrutx day works as a six-part narrative: warm-up out of Arta, ridge exposure, Ermita de Betlem traverse, Puig S'Atalaia Freda summit moment, Es Canons technical climax and a long coastal recovery traverse back through wild coves and backcountry terrain.

  • Inland activation: dry-stone walls, gravel connectors and rolling terrain
  • Ridge exposure: limestone spine, sea views and rising technical demand
  • Ermita de Betlem traverse: fractured rock, short climbs and highline movement
  • Summit moment: full visual dominance over Alcudia Bay
  • Es Canons descent: exposed limestone steps and cliff-edge switchbacks
  • Coastal recovery traverse: remote coves and rugged Mediterranean immersion

Terrain System Architecture

Four Systems Around The Arta Hub

Llevant is a segmented riding ecosystem rather than a uniform trail area. Arta acts as the hub, while the ride systems radiate into coastal ridges, interior forests, dry torrents and the remote peninsula enduro zone.

  • System I Coastal Ridge System: exposed limestone, high-line singletrack and sea views
  • System II Interior Forest Network: shaded pine and holm oak, heat refuge and rhythm
  • System III Dry Canyon and Torrent Links: erosion corridors and mobility connectors
  • System IV Remote Peninsula Enduro Zone: raw, isolated, high-consequence backcountry

Signature Trails

The Five Trails That Define The Pilot

The signature trails show the full Llevant range: black-level cliffside limestone, coastal rhythm, pine forest flow, watchtower drops and connector ridges that make group routing possible.

  • Es Canons: 1.6 km / -290 m, black STS S3-S4, exposed limestone masterpiece
  • Cami d'en Mondoi: 3.2 km / -110 m, red STS S2, coastal flow and chunk
  • Ses Costellades: 1.5 km / -140 m, blue-red STS S1-S2, pine forest flow
  • Talaia Son Jaumell: 2.1 km / -210 m, red STS S2-S3, watchtower drop
  • Coll des Pescadors: 2.8 km / -180 m, blue-red STS S1-S2, ridge connector

Basecamp System

Arta Is The Correct Basecamp

Arta is the definitive basecamp for the Llevant ETS pilot: an authentic inland Mallorcan town with stone architecture, independent cafes, local restaurants and direct access to the terrain systems. It gives the full Llevant experience without diluting it through resort logistics.

  • Best access to all four terrain systems
  • Authentic inland atmosphere and no resort feel
  • Strong expedition-style start point
  • Good balance between culture and trail access
  • Secondary basecamp: Cala Ratjada / Capdepera for coastal logistics and accommodation supply

Modular Trip System

3-Day, 5-Day And 7-Day Ride Architecture

Llevant trips should be built around energy, exposure and technical load. The 3-day version captures the highlights, the 5-day version adds deeper terrain variety, and the 7-day traverse gives full Serra de Llevant immersion.

  • 3-Day Blitz: Cala Torta, Cap de Ferrutx Spine, Sa Duaia Forest Matrix
  • 5-Day Explorer: adds Talaia Son Jaumell / Capdepera Castle and Ermita de Betlem Backcountry Drop
  • 7-Day Traverse: adds Punta de n'Amer Southern Transition and Es Canons Encore or custom tech loop
  • Journey arc: orientation, build, climax, expansion, immersion

Bike Platform Logic

Enduro Bike Or E-MTB

Llevant can be ridden on an acoustic enduro bike, but it rewards strong riders and punishes poor setup. E-MTBs unlock a different version of the system, turning jagged limestone climbs into uphill-trials puzzles and increasing gravity output per hour.

  • Enduro bike: 150-170 mm travel, reinforced casings, inserts, strong brakes and aggressive tread
  • E-MTB: ideal for repeated Sa Duaia loops, technical climbs and mixed-group pacing
  • 750 Wh battery recommended for the full Cap de Ferrutx day
  • Turbo is useful for short steps; long ridges require Eco / Trail discipline

Weather And Season Logic

October To May Is Prime

October to May is the core Llevant riding window. Temperatures are manageable, trail grip improves after light rain and the island becomes much quieter than in peak tourism months. June and September are possible with strict heat management. July and August are low-suitability months for serious riding.

  • Prime season: October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May
  • Shoulder / hot months: June and September
  • Summer dead zone: July and August
  • Summer protocol: wheels rolling by 06:00-06:30, shaded routes by mid-morning, double hydration

Risk And Surface Logic

Heat, Wet Limestone, Clay And Torrents

Llevant changes quickly with weather. Low exposed ridges make heat a serious limiter. Wet limestone becomes slick and unpredictable. Clay valley floors can become drivetrain-destroying after rain. Dry torrents can become hazardous during Mediterranean storm events.

  • Heat exposure: avoid exposed ridges during hot midday conditions
  • Wet limestone: avoid Es Canons unless riders have advanced wet-rock experience
  • Clay valley floors: avoid after rain when sticky and damaging
  • Torrent risk: avoid during or immediately after heavy rain

Fallback Routing Logic

Adapt The Day Before The Day Breaks

The ETS pilot depends on fallback logic. If ridges are too hot, move to Sa Duaia and Ses Costellades. If limestone is wet, shift toward Cala Ratjada, Punta de n'Amer or safer inland cultural loops. If wind is strong, avoid cliff-edge traverses and use forest or lower canyon connectors.

  • High ridges too hot: use Interior Forest Network
  • Limestone wet: avoid exposed ridge and cliff systems
  • Strong wind: avoid the highest ridge lines
  • Group fatigue: shorten through connectors and regroup at coves or valley hubs

Group Dynamics System

Mixed Groups Need Route Intelligence

Llevant is technically unforgiving, so mixed-ability groups need intelligent route design. Experts can ride Es Canons, Cap de Ferrutx, Talaia Son Jaumell and technical ridge descents while intermediates use Sa Duaia, Coll des Pescadors, Cala Ratjada and lower-consequence coastal lines.

  • Expert / high-gravity riders: S3-S4 terrain, exposed drops and loose limestone
  • Intermediate / mixed-ability riders: controlled technicality, forest flow and safer group options
  • Split-routing works because Arta acts as a hub-and-spoke system
  • This is a strong guided or semi-guided destination

Advanced ETS Intelligence

Spatial, Route, Physics And Boundary Logic

Great Llevant rides sequence early high-consequence ridges while riders are fresh, forest shade during heat build-up, dry torrent connectors for system movement, coastal recovery after technical peaks and clear regroup points for mixed groups. The best pattern is chunky-to-flow: technical ridges first, shaded forest or coastal connectors later.

  • Avoid dead-end coastal drops and private-finca traps
  • Respect natural park boundaries and established trails
  • Carry fallback routes and close gates behind you
  • Manage tyre pressure, brake heat, fatigue and e-MTB torque on sharp limestone

Who It Is For

Skilled Natural-Terrain Riders

Llevant is best for advanced trail riders, technical enduro riders, E-MTB explorers, winter riding groups, riders who enjoy natural terrain, solitude and coastal exposure, and mixed groups with intelligent route planning.

  • Advanced trail riders and technical enduro riders
  • E-MTB explorers and winter riding groups
  • Riders seeking natural terrain, solitude and coastal exposure
  • Mixed groups using split-routing and guided logic

Who It Is Not For

Not A Casual Flow Destination

Llevant is not ideal for beginners, bike-park lap riders, pure flow-trail seekers, riders avoiding exposure, riders on lightweight tyres, groups unwilling to adapt to weather or riders who want predictable surfaces and clear signage everywhere.

  • Not for beginners or casual bike-park riders
  • Not for pure flow-trail seekers
  • Not for lightweight tyre setups
  • Not for groups unwilling to adapt to weather and terrain

Final Positioning

The Maritime Tech-Enduro Sanctuary

Llevant / Arta is the rawest, most technical and most emotionally surprising riding system on Mallorca: a place where sea-level terrain behaves with alpine consequence and every ride is shaped by exposure, limestone and route intelligence.

  • A winter-capable sea-level technical enduro destination
  • A true expedition feeling rather than a packaged product
  • The anti-bikepark of the Mediterranean
  • Where the Mediterranean stops being scenery and becomes terrain
