Push Horizons!

The Riding

Ainsa / Zona Zero is for riders who believe the trail matters more than anything else. Long before enduro became a recognised discipline, before bike parks spread across Europe and before shuttle-assisted riding became mainstream, riders in Sobrarbe were recovering forgotten mountain paths that connected villages, valleys and mountains throughout the central Pyrenees. Those paths became Zona Zero: one of the places that helped define modern Spanish enduro.

Why Ride Ainsa / Zona Zero?

Where Modern Spanish Enduro Began

Ainsa is not just a famous mountain-bike destination. It is a destination built on trails: recovered shepherd paths, old mule tracks, village links, natural singletrack and terrain that feels purpose-built for mountain bikes even when the lines are centuries old. The appeal is not a lift system, a bike park or artificial features. It is the feeling that every descent has history, every corner has been shaped by real mountain use, and every ride belongs to a living landscape.

  • One of the benchmark natural enduro destinations in Europe
  • Historic Sobrarbe paths recovered for riding
  • A medieval town that became a true MTB basecamp
  • Trail quality first: natural descents, switchbacks, rock and forest
  • A destination riders return to year after year

The Zona Zero Story

How Ainsa Changed Mountain Biking In Spain

Twenty years ago many of Sobrarbe's historic mountain paths were disappearing. Ancient routes that once connected villages, shepherd settlements and mountain communities were becoming overgrown and forgotten. Local riders, volunteers, municipalities and residents chose a different future: preserve the heritage, ride the trails, and share them with the world. That initiative became Zona Zero.

  • One of Europe's most influential mountain-bike destination projects
  • Trail recovery as cultural preservation, not just tourism development
  • International media, professional riders and major events followed the trail quality
  • Enduro World Series racing helped cement Ainsa's reputation
  • The original vision remains clear: the trails still come first

By The Numbers

A Destination Built On Trails

Zona Zero is impressive because of scale, but also because of density and authenticity. A week in Ainsa can move from classic enduro descents to village-to-village routes, e-MTB loops, ridge traverses and technical natural singletrack without repeating the same experience.

  • More than 1,000 km of MTB routes across Sobrarbe
  • One of Europe's largest trail recovery projects
  • 20+ official enduro sectors
  • Hundreds of kilometres of natural singletrack
  • Enduro World Series host venue
  • Dedicated route app and digital navigation system
  • Extensive guide, shuttle and bike-service infrastructure
  • Trail network connecting villages throughout Sobrarbe

Signature Ride

Hall Of Fame Descents

Many destinations have one famous trail. Ainsa has a whole collection of descents that have become almost mythical among riders visiting the Pyrenees. These are not bike-park runs. They are natural mountain-bike descents that helped build the reputation of Zona Zero.

  • Coda Sarten: the classic sequence of natural switchbacks that seems to descend forever
  • Bajo Penas: big views, technical terrain and unmistakable Sobrarbe character
  • Cozcurrita: fast, natural, technical and exactly what riders expect from Ainsa
  • Partara: a local favourite close to town, short on logistics but full of trail quality
  • Miradores: a perfect example of how scenery and trail quality combine in the region

Ride Character

Natural Enduro At Its Purest

Ainsa is not about one huge mountain. It is about trail density and constant variation. Ancient mule paths turn into technical switchbacks, forest sections open into ridgelines, rock gardens arrive without warning, and village links give even big days a sense of journey. The genius of Ainsa is that riders can spend a full week here and still feel there is another version of the destination waiting.

  • Natural singletrack and technical switchbacks
  • Ancient stone paths, rocky sections and forest trails
  • Village-to-village routes through Sobrarbe
  • Enduro-focused riding with e-MTB friendly loop options
  • Huge route variety for intermediate to advanced groups

Scenery

Trails First. Mountains Second.

The scenery around Ainsa is exceptional, but unlike many destinations the landscape is not the primary attraction. The trails are. The mountains simply provide the stage. Routes pass through medieval Ainsa, the Cinca and Ara valleys, traditional stone villages, forested ridges, canyon landscapes and viewpoints toward Pena Montanesa, Ordesa and the higher Pyrenees.

  • Medieval Ainsa as the social and logistical base
  • Pena Montanesa, Cinca Valley and Ara Valley
  • Traditional Sobrarbe villages and abandoned hamlets
  • Forested ridges, canyon landscapes and mountain viewpoints
  • A dry, rocky Pyrenean mood that feels different from the alpine north

Best Season

One Of Spain's Longest MTB Seasons

Because much of the riding sits below the highest alpine terrain, Ainsa enjoys one of the longest riding seasons in the Pyrenees. Spring and autumn are the premium windows, summer can work with altitude and timing, and many lower routes remain rideable through mild winter periods.

  • Prime months: March, April, May and June
  • Autumn prime: September, October and November
  • Lower trails can often ride well in winter
  • Summer works best with early starts, shaded routes and smart elevation choices
  • Route selection changes with heat, storms and trail conditions

How We Build It

Following The Best Trails

The challenge in Ainsa is not finding good riding. The challenge is choosing among hundreds of possibilities. We build each trip around rider ability, technical confidence, daily descending goals, analogue or e-MTB bikes, weather, shuttle support and how much challenge the group wants each day.

  • Hall Of Fame descents and Zona Zero classics
  • Big mountain adventure days when conditions allow
  • Flow-focused days for mixed groups
  • Technical challenge routes for stronger riders
  • Village-to-village rides that connect the history of Sobrarbe
  • Smart shuttle and e-MTB planning to maximise quality descending

Who It Is For

Riders Who Care About Trails

Choose Ainsa if your group measures a destination by the quality of its descents. This is a place where trail quality comes first and everything else follows. It is strongest for riders who want natural terrain, technical variety, a proven MTB ecosystem and a destination with real mountain-bike culture.

  • Ideal for intermediate and advanced riders
  • Excellent for enduro riders, trail riders and e-MTB groups
  • Strong choice for multi-day MTB holidays
  • Perfect for groups seeking variety and a proven destination
  • Less suitable for bike-park-only riders or beginner-only groups

Pyrenees Collection

The Enduro Purist

Within the Pyrenees Collection, Ainsa has the clearest identity: The Enduro Purist. Choose Ainsa for enduro heritage and trail density. Choose Ordesa for scenery, Bielsa for wilderness, Val d'Aran for endless descents, Benasque for alpine exploration and Puro Pirineo for high-mountain scale.

Epic Takeaway

Some Destinations Follow The Enduro Movement. Ainsa Helped Create It.

Built on recovered historic paths, shaped by local passion and refined through decades of riding, Zona Zero remains one of the purest expressions of mountain biking in Europe. Before enduro had rankings, rules and world tours, it had trails. Many of those trails were here.

Aragon Bike Proof Points

Zona Zero As An Official Aragon MTB Benchmark

The Aragon Bike guide gives Zona Zero the exact context it deserves: Sobrarbe offers more than 1,000 km of enduro and all-mountain trails in a fascinating mountain setting. The official route list also shows the range behind the reputation, from alpine lakes to badlands, canyons, viewpoints and long-distance epics.

  • Zona Zero: more than 1,000 km of enduro and all-mountain trails
  • Ibon de la Basa Mora: alpine lake objective with a long singletrack descent
  • Route to Pena Montanesa and MaxiAvalanche de la Pena Montanesa
  • River Vero Canyon and Millennial Guara inside Sierra y Canones de Guara landscapes
  • Journey to the Underworld: long, difficult Sobrarbe route where GPS is essential
