Push Horizons!

The Riding

Fifteen minutes from one of Europe's greatest cities lies a completely different world. Deep forests, granite maritime ridges, medieval monasteries and technical singletracks create one of the most surprising riding destinations on the continent.

Basecamp decision logic

Ride Intelligence

Use this as the quick-fit logic for season, bike setup, group level and how much support your trip needs.

Best season

October-May

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced depending on route choice / approx. S2-S4

Best bike

Trail MTB or eMTB. Light enduro works well for more technical local routes.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Barcelona Backcountry is the hidden riding layer behind the city: dry Mediterranean trails, pine forest, rocky ridges and local links that are not always easy to understand from maps alone. It is strongest for riders who want Barcelona culture and real trail days in the same trip, especially with local route intelligence.

Best season

October-May

Caution season

Summer heat can be intense, especially on exposed climbs and dry inland trails. Weekend trail use near the city can be busy.

Ride character

Mediterranean backcountry, dry singletrack, pine forest, rocky ridges, coastal-range climbs, hidden local trails and city-to-mountain contrast.

Typical ride day

20-45 km / 500-1,300 m+ / 3-5 hours

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced depending on route choice / approx. S2-S4

Fitness demand

Medium. Climbs can be punchy and dry; technical sections and repeated short descents can make rides physical.

Best bike

Trail MTB or eMTB. Light enduro works well for more technical local routes.

eMTB suitability

Very good - eMTBs help link dry climbs, ridge trails and hidden local sectors efficiently.

Guide logic

Recommended for first visit, because the best riding is often local, fragmented and not obvious from public route files.

Shuttle usefulness

Usually not central. The area works best through local linking, eMTB range and smart loop design.

Weather logic

Excellent winter and shoulder-season option. Avoid peak summer heat and adapt route choices after heavy rain on rocky or clay surfaces.

Best for

  • Riders based in or visiting Barcelona
  • eMTB groups
  • Technical Mediterranean trail riders
  • Short ride weeks or add-on riding days
  • Groups who want city, food and backcountry in one trip

Not ideal for

  • Riders seeking remote wilderness every day
  • Pure bike-park riders
  • Beginners on technical local trails
  • Peak-summer riders without heat planning

Why Ride Barcelona Backcountry?

The Wild Side Of The Metropolis

Most mountain bike destinations begin where cities end. Barcelona is the opposite. Here, one of Europe's greatest cultural capitals and one of Catalonia's wildest riding landscapes collide head-on. Within fifteen minutes of leaving the Gothic streets of Barcelona, the urban grid dissolves completely. Glass towers, boulevards and traffic lights vanish behind you, replaced by dense Mediterranean forests, hidden monasteries, granite ridges and technical singletracks stretching toward the sea. This is the Wild Side of the Metropolis: a place where you can spend the morning riding deep forest loam beneath a silent canopy of holm oaks, encounter wild boars on remote singletracks, and by afternoon stand on a mountain ridge looking directly down at the Sagrada Familia and the Mediterranean. What makes Barcelona Backcountry truly unique is the existence of two completely different riding worlds: the dark, organic forests of Collserola and the loose granite maritime ridges of the Maresme coast. Together they create one of the most diverse riding ecosystems in Europe. This is not urban riding. This is wilderness riding above one of the world's great cities.

Basecamp

Sant Cugat - The Monastery Town

If Barcelona is the cultural capital of Catalonia, Sant Cugat is the gateway to its backcountry. Nestled directly against the western slopes of Collserola, the town combines immediate trail access with one of the most important medieval monuments in the region. The Reial Monestir de Sant Cugat dominates the town centre. Founded in the 9th century, this fortified monastery became one of medieval Catalonia's most powerful religious institutions, and its Romanesque cloister remains one of the finest in Europe. This is not simply a convenient place to stay. It is the spiritual gateway to the mountains. From Sant Cugat, riders can directly access Collserola, Tibidabo, Acueducto, Viaducte, Secretos and Maresme crossings within minutes, while the FGC railway places central Barcelona less than twenty minutes away. Premia de Dalt is the alternative basecamp for riders focused on Maresme, La Poma and the saulo gravity networks.

  • Sant Cugat: monastery town and Collserola gateway
  • Direct trail access plus fast rail links to Barcelona
  • Post-ride vermouth and Catalan food in the monastery square
  • Premia de Dalt: the gravity coast alternative

Signature Rides

The Top 5 Rides That Define Barcelona Backcountry

The signature rides reveal the destination's dual personality: Collserola forest, hidden infrastructure, Maresme granite, industrial history and maritime fortresses.

  • Collserola-Maresme Crossing: the defining forest-granite-city-sea ride
  • Acueducto: a technical line through hidden aqueducts and ancient infrastructure
  • La Bestia: the saulo test piece and one of Maresme's hardest natural gravity trails
  • Viaducte: fast forest riding beneath monumental railway architecture
  • Burriac Castle Loop: the maritime fortress ride with history, sea views and technical riding

Hero Ride

Collserola-Maresme Crossing

This ride explains Barcelona. The journey begins high on the Tibidabo ridgeline overlooking the city. From here, riders disappear into the dense forests of Collserola. The urban world fades away, the singletracks become darker, steeper and more technical. Hours later comes the defining moment: the Barcelona Reveal. You emerge from a dense corridor of trees and the entire city suddenly erupts beneath you. The Eixample grid, the Sagrada Familia, the Mediterranean and five million people spread across the horizon. You are standing on a raw mountain trail while floating above one of the world's great cities. The ride continues north across agricultural valleys before entering the second world of the destination: the Maresme. Forest becomes granite, loam becomes saulo, the city disappears behind you and the sea takes over. The final descents drift through loose maritime sand and granite ridges before delivering you to the Mediterranean coastline.

  • 65 km distance
  • Advanced difficulty
  • All-mountain adventure
  • Tibidabo, Collserola, Maresme and the Mediterranean in one ride

Ride Character

The Two Worlds Of Barcelona

The defining characteristic of Barcelona Backcountry is its dual personality. Collserola is the urban jungle: dense Mediterranean forests, deep loam, roots, rock gardens, wild boars and hidden ravines. The riding is organic, technical and surprisingly wild, and you quickly forget the city exists. Maresme is the saulo coast: granite mountains, Mediterranean views, loose decomposed granite and high-speed drifts. The riding becomes faster, more exposed and distinctly maritime, with the sea never far away.

  • Collserola: deep loam, roots, wild boars and urban jungle
  • Maresme: saulo granite, Mediterranean views and coastal gravity
  • Technical singletrack, freeride culture and E-MTB-friendly links
  • City access without losing a real backcountry feel

The Four Faces

Tibidabo, Collserola, Sant Cugat And Maresme

Barcelona Backcountry is best understood through four faces. Tibidabo is the balcony, crowned by its neo-Gothic church and historic amusement park above the city. Collserola is the urban jungle, the wild green shield protecting Barcelona. Sant Cugat is the monastery town, historic, authentic and Catalan. Maresme is the saulo coast, the granite maritime frontier of drifting corners, freeride culture and sea-view gravity.

  • Tibidabo: the balcony above Barcelona
  • Collserola: the urban jungle
  • Sant Cugat: the monastery town
  • Maresme: the saulo coast

Scenery

The Barcelona Reveal

The defining viewpoint arrives when the forest suddenly opens and the city explodes into view. Sagrada Familia rises from the centre of the urban grid while the Mediterranean stretches endlessly beyond. It is one of Europe's most powerful mountain biking viewpoints. The scenery is not only visual: Collserola's wild boars, Sant Cugat's monastery stones, Maresme's granite ridges and the urban skyline all sit inside the same ride.

Culture

The Living Palimpsest

Barcelona is not simply a city. It is a living archaeological layer cake. Romans, medieval merchants, industrialists, anarchists and modern architects have all left their mark on the landscape. The mountains and trails surrounding the city were shaped by centuries of human history. The most unique finish in the collection is the urban climax: trails descend from mountain wilderness directly toward the historic urban core, passing Civil War bunkers, Roman walls, Gothic streets and modernist landmarks.

Freeride Culture

La Poma And The Industrial Reset

Barcelona Backcountry also houses one of Europe's most influential freeride cultures. La Poma Bikepark has shaped generations of riders and influenced trail-building across the region. Its freeride DNA extends beyond the bike park into the surrounding mountains. After riding, the reset is equally urban and local: Poblenou's creative underbelly, vermouth, bombas, tapas and the salt-smoke culture of the Mediterranean.

Best Season

Year-Round, With Spring And Autumn Prime

Barcelona Backcountry is one of Europe's most versatile riding destinations. Spring is prime, with perfect temperatures and excellent trail conditions. Autumn is outstanding and often quieter. Winter remains excellent while much of northern Europe is frozen. Summer can work with early starts, but heat and trail exposure need respect.

  • Spring: prime conditions
  • Autumn: outstanding riding and fewer visitors
  • Winter: excellent city-access riding
  • Summer: early starts recommended

How We Build It

Forests, Granite Ridges And Barcelona Evenings

Barcelona Backcountry works best as a destination of contrasts. We combine Collserola, Tibidabo, Sant Cugat, Maresme, Burriac, La Poma and Barcelona city. Ride forests in the morning, granite ridges in the afternoon and explore Barcelona by evening. Route design must respect park rules, trail status and local access, especially in Collserola, while Maresme provides the stronger technical MTB and freeride layer.

  • Sant Cugat basecamp for Collserola and city access
  • Maresme days for granite, freeride and coastal gravity
  • Guided route choice for access, trail status and technical links
  • Ideal for short breaks, E-MTB trips and mixed culture/riding holidays

Who It Is For

Enduro Riders, Freeriders And Urban Explorers

Barcelona Backcountry is perfect for enduro riders, E-MTB riders, freeriders, urban explorers, adventure riders, multi-day MTB holidays and riders looking for variety. It is less suitable for bike-park-only riders, riders looking for alpine terrain, complete beginners or family MTB holidays.

  • Perfect for enduro, freeride, E-MTB and adventure riders
  • Perfect for riders who want city culture and technical trails
  • Less suitable for alpine-only riders and family MTB holidays
  • Less suitable for riders who only want a bike park

Basecamp DNA

Variety, Urban Access And Freeride Culture

Verdict

The Wild Side Of The Metropolis

If Tenerife is The Tyranny of Verticality and Malaga is The Costa del Enduro, then Barcelona Backcountry is The Wild Side of the Metropolis: a place where riders leave one of Europe's greatest cities behind, disappear into forests and granite mountains, and return by evening to Catalan plazas, medieval monasteries and the skyline of Barcelona.
