Push Horizons!

The Riding

Sierra Nevada is for riders who think bigger: bigger mountains, bigger descents and bigger days. Home to Mulhacen, 3,479 m, the highest mountain on the Iberian Peninsula, and Veleta, 3,398 m, Europe's highest cyclable summit, Sierra Nevada offers an MTB experience unlike anywhere else on the continent. This is one of the few places in Europe where a rider can start above 3,000 metres, descend through alpine terrain, pine forests, white villages and desert canyons, and finish near the Mediterranean Sea.

Basecamp decision logic

Ride Intelligence

Use this as the quick-fit logic for season, bike setup, group level and how much support your trip needs.

Best season

June-October for high routes / March-June and September-November for lower and mixed-altitude routes

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Sierra Nevada is the high-mountain giant of southern Spain: huge vertical, altitude, old mule tracks, technical descents and the cultural pull of Granada and Andalucia below. It can deliver unforgettable ride days, but only with serious respect for season, weather, altitude and group fit.

Best season

June-October for high routes / March-June and September-November for lower and mixed-altitude routes

Caution season

Winter and early spring bring snow and high-mountain limitations. Summer heat can be severe at lower elevations, while altitude weather can change quickly.

Ride character

High mountain riding, huge vertical, alpine terrain, dry technical descents, old mule tracks, pine forest, altitude, big views and Granada/Andalucia culture.

Typical ride day

25-55 km / 900-2,000 m+ / 4-8 hours depending on altitude, shuttle and route design

Technical level

Intermediate+ to expert / approx. S2-S5 depending on route choice

Fitness demand

High. Expect altitude, long climbs, sustained descents, rough surfaces and serious mountain-weather decision-making.

Best bike

Trail or enduro MTB. eMTB highly suitable for climbing-heavy days, but battery and altitude logistics matter.

eMTB suitability

Excellent - especially for linking huge vertical, high routes and long descents, provided charging and route planning are handled well.

Guide logic

Strongly recommended for first visit, high-altitude routes, advanced descents, weather windows and mixed-level groups.

Shuttle usefulness

Very useful for big vertical days and high-start descents, but eMTB route craft can also unlock strong self-powered options.

Weather logic

Altitude drives the ride plan. Snowline, storms, heat at lower elevations and exposure must shape route choice.

Best for

  • Strong mountain riders
  • Advanced trail and enduro groups
  • eMTB riders seeking huge vertical
  • Riders who want high-altitude Andalucia
  • Groups who value guide/shuttle support

Not ideal for

  • Beginners
  • Riders looking for easy low-effort loops
  • Groups uncomfortable with altitude or exposure
  • Peak-summer riders without heat and altitude planning

Why Ride Sierra Nevada?

Europe's Highest Ride

Sierra Nevada is not simply another mountain destination. The massif rises dramatically from Granada and Almeria, contains more than 15 peaks above 3,000 metres, and creates some of the greatest vertical relief available to mountain bikers anywhere in Europe. Many destinations have mountains. Very few have mountains this high. Even fewer allow you to ride them.

  • Mulhacen: 3,479 m, highest mountain on the Iberian Peninsula
  • Veleta: 3,398 m, Europe's highest cyclable summit
  • 15+ peaks above 3,000 m
  • Sierra Nevada National Park
  • 450+ km TransNevada route network
  • Famous summit-to-sea and high-to-low descents

By The Numbers

Altitude, Scale And Real Vertical

The numbers tell only part of the story, but they explain why Sierra Nevada sits apart from other Spanish basecamps. This is a destination where route planning can start above the clouds, where descents regularly exceed 2,000 vertical metres, and where the riding can move through whole ecosystems in a single day.

  • 80+ MTB routes listed on Komoot
  • 1,250+ recorded MTB riders
  • Average Komoot rating around 4.5 / 5
  • Sierra Nevada Bike Park with 30+ km of marked trails
  • Nearly 1,000 m of bike-park vertical drop
  • One of Europe's premier altitude-training destinations

Signature Ride

Veleta To The Mediterranean

Every great destination has one ride that captures its essence. For Sierra Nevada, that ride begins on Veleta. At 3,398 metres, riders stand above the clouds looking across mainland Spain's highest mountains. Below lies an enormous landscape stretching from Granada toward the Mediterranean coast. Then the descent begins. It is the clearest expression of the basecamp: altitude first, then a long journey down through changing terrain.

  • High alpine terrain and glacial landscapes
  • Pine forests and ancient mountain tracks
  • White villages and Mediterranean foothills
  • Desert canyons and coastal valleys
  • Total vertical drop can exceed 3,000 m depending on the route

Veleta & Pradollano

The Roof Of Spain

This is where Sierra Nevada becomes truly unique. The Veleta sector delivers the highest mountain biking in Southern Europe. Above 3,000 metres the landscape feels almost lunar: gravel roads, rocky tracks, open alpine terrain and huge skies. It feels more like the Andes than mainland Europe.

  • Veleta summit area
  • Hoya de la Mora
  • Borreguiles
  • High alpine descents
  • Europe's highest cyclable terrain

Guejar Sierra

The Hidden Enduro Capital

If Veleta represents altitude, Guejar Sierra represents trail riding. Located on the northern side of the range, this area has quietly become one of the strongest enduro zones in Andalucia, with technical natural descents, event history and a growing local MTB identity.

  • Pena Partida
  • Loma Papeles
  • Alguacil Trail
  • Romantic Travelers
  • Ride Sierra Nevada enduro terrain
  • Technical natural descents close to Granada

TransNevada

Spain's Great Mountain Traverse

The TransNevada is one of the most ambitious MTB routes in Spain. Stretching over 450 kilometres around the entire Sierra Nevada massif, it links valleys, villages, forests, passes and mountain landscapes across Granada and Almeria. It is the route that turns Sierra Nevada from a riding area into a true expedition.

  • Lecrin Valley
  • Marquesado del Zenete
  • Guadix
  • Alto Andarax
  • Alpujarra Granadina
  • Alpujarra Almeriense
  • High Sierra Nevada

The Alpujarras

White Villages In The Clouds

The southern slopes of Sierra Nevada offer an entirely different experience. Here riders move through white villages, terraced hillsides, ancient irrigation channels and mountain roads first developed during the Moorish period. Capileira, Bubion, Pampaneira, Trevelez and Cadiar give the Sierra Nevada story its cultural layer.

  • White villages and Moorish-influenced landscapes
  • Terraced hillsides and acequia irrigation channels
  • Ancient mule tracks and mountain roads
  • Direct link between high mountains and Andalusian culture

Granada Foothills

The Year-Round Playground

Lower down, the mountains surrounding Granada offer excellent riding even when snow blocks the higher routes. These foothills are essential for building real trips because they add flexibility: pine forests, reservoir routes, historic water channels, technical climbs and natural singletrack within easy reach of the city.

  • Lower altitude options when high routes are snowed in
  • Pine forests, reservoirs and historic water channels
  • Technical climbs and natural singletrack
  • Useful winter and shoulder-season riding layer

Ride Character

Big Mountains. Bigger Descents.

Sierra Nevada is defined by vertical relief. This is not a destination built around short loops. It is built around mountain journeys. The terrain changes constantly with altitude: above the tree line, through pine forests, across white villages, into olive groves, badlands and Mediterranean vegetation.

  • High-altitude riding and huge descents
  • Natural enduro terrain and rocky switchbacks
  • Alpine landscapes, desert canyons and white villages
  • Multi-day traverses and e-MTB exploration
  • Long mountain days where weather and altitude matter

Scenery

The Most Diverse Mountains In Spain

Sierra Nevada is not one landscape. It is many. A single ride can move through alpine peaks, glacial lakes, high mountain plateaus, pine forests, badlands, river gorges, white villages, Moorish irrigation systems, Mediterranean coastlines and desert-like terrain. The contrast between snow-capped summits and the coast is what makes it unforgettable.

  • Alpine peaks and glacial landscapes
  • Pine forests, badlands and river gorges
  • White villages and Moorish irrigation systems
  • Mediterranean coastlines and desert-like terrain

Best Season

May To October

The highest routes remain snowbound until late spring, so Sierra Nevada is a true altitude-aware destination. May and June can be excellent for lower and mid-level rides, summer opens the highest terrain and bike-park windows, and September often delivers the best combination of weather, trail conditions and visibility.

  • Spring: strong, with higher route access depending on snow
  • Summer: full high-mountain potential with heat-aware planning
  • Autumn: excellent, especially September and October
  • Winter: lower Granada foothills and selected routes only
  • Prime months: May, June, July, August, September and October

How We Build It

Altitude Changes Everything

Sierra Nevada is a destination where route planning matters. Snow, wind, temperature, exposure, rider ability, fitness, e-MTB range and technical preferences all shape the riding experience. The goal is simple: experience the biggest mountain biking available in Southern Europe without wasting days on the wrong altitude, route or weather window.

  • Veleta summit and high-mountain ride days
  • Guejar Sierra enduro days
  • TransNevada segments
  • Alpujarra adventures
  • Bike park sessions
  • Multi-day traverses and lower-foothill backup plans

Who It Is For

Riders Who Think Bigger

Choose Sierra Nevada if your group wants scale. This is a destination for riders who enjoy long mountain days, altitude, changing terrain and genuine adventure. It is strongest for intermediate and advanced riders, enduro riders, e-MTB riders, multi-day adventurers, mountain lovers and riders seeking huge descents.

  • Ideal for intermediate and advanced riders
  • Excellent for e-MTB riders and enduro riders
  • Strong for multi-day adventurers and mountain lovers
  • Less suitable for beginner-only groups
  • Not ideal for riders uncomfortable with exposure or changing mountain weather
