Push Horizons!

The Riding

Puro Pirineo is for riders who want the closest thing to Alpine mountain biking without leaving Spain. Located in the Benasque Valley, at the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, it sits beneath the greatest concentration of high mountains in the range and delivers a riding experience defined by altitude, exposure, scale and endless views.

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Puro Pirineo is a serious Pyrenean basecamp for riders who want natural descents, valley-to-ridge route logic and proper mountain terrain. It has more of a raw trail-network feel than a polished bike-park experience, which makes route choice and local knowledge especially valuable.

Best season

May-October

Caution season

Winter and early spring can limit higher routes. Summer storms and heat in lower valleys require timing and route choice.

Ride character

Pyrenean enduro, long natural descents, forest singletrack, high-valley links, old paths, steep terrain and big mountain views.

Typical ride day

25-50 km / 900-1,800 m+ / 4-7 hours

Technical level

Intermediate+ to advanced / approx. S2-S4+

Fitness demand

Medium-high to high. Expect long climbs, physical descents and real mountain days.

Best bike

Trail or enduro MTB. eMTB highly suitable.

eMTB suitability

Excellent - eMTBs make the long valley links and repeated climbs much more flexible.

Guide logic

Recommended for first visit, technical trails, mixed groups and high-mountain route choices.

Shuttle usefulness

Useful for maximising vertical and accessing bigger enduro descents.

Weather logic

Mountain weather matters. Storms, wet roots, heat in lower valleys and high-route exposure should shape daily plans.

Best for

  • Natural enduro riders
  • Strong Pyrenees trail riders
  • eMTB groups wanting big vertical
  • Riders looking for less crowded mountain terrain
  • Groups who value guide/shuttle support

Not ideal for

  • Beginners
  • Riders looking for easy flow trails only
  • Groups avoiding long climbs
  • Riders uncomfortable with steep natural descents

Why Ride Puro Pirineo?

Spain's Alpine MTB Kingdom

Surrounded by more than 60 peaks above 3,000 metres, including Aneto, Posets, Maladeta, Perdiguero and Cotiella, Puro Pirineo is Spain's most alpine MTB destination. This is not simply a mountain bike centre. It is a high-mountain riding kingdom where every route feels like a mountain adventure.

  • Official MTB destination established in 2014
  • 30 official MTB routes and more than 700 km of riding in the Benasque Valley
  • 40+ MTB, gravel and road routes across the wider destination
  • 60+ peaks above 3,000 m
  • Home of Aneto, 3,404 m, the highest mountain in the Pyrenees

By The Numbers

A Destination Built For Big Days

The territory combines technical enduro descents, cycle-alpinism adventures, high mountain traverses, natural singletrack, E-MTB exploration, gravel routes and road cycling into one integrated destination. The value is not only the quality of the trails. It is the atmosphere of riding beneath giant peaks.

  • 9 municipalities and 100+ businesses supporting the destination
  • Host destination of Trans-Nomad
  • Host of Puro Pirineo Enduro Race
  • EWS Qualifier Gold events hosted
  • 1,000 m-1,700 m vertical descents
  • Pump Track in Castejon de Sos

Signature Ride

Integral Del Gallinero

If there is one route that defines Puro Pirineo, it is Integral del Gallinero. Frequently cited among the best mountain-bike descents in Spain and regularly featured in international MTB media, Gallinero is the benchmark against which other routes in the valley are measured. Starting around 2,200 metres, it traverses alpine terrain before dropping into one of the longest and most technical descents in the Pyrenees.

  • Infamous red stone steps in the upper section
  • Alpine meadows and rocky ridgelines
  • Technical slabs and demanding line choice
  • Forest singletrack and flowing lower sections
  • A rite of passage for enduro riders

Essential Rides

Sierra Negra, Rincon Del Cielo And Rabaltueras

The classic rides each show a different face of the kingdom. Sierra Negra is the ultimate Pyrenean viewpoint, with commitment on the climb and more than 1,200 metres of descending beneath Aneto, Posets and Maladeta. Rincon del Cielo is the new crown jewel: a spectacular ridge route with around 1,500 metres of descending. Rabaltueras feels almost fairy-tale, moving from open alpine landscapes into tunnels of boxwood and moss-covered forest.

  • Sierra Negra: huge skyline views and one of Spain's finest mountain descents
  • Rincon del Cielo: massive views, technical sections and flowing descents
  • Rabaltueras: alpine-to-forest variety and exceptional beauty
  • La Picada: a classic high-mountain traverse
  • Puerto de Sahun: panoramic climbing and long descending through waterfalls, forests and pastures

Ride Character

Alpine Enduro At Its Purest

Puro Pirineo is defined by verticality. The routes are bigger. The descents are longer. The mountains are higher. The commitment level is greater. This is riding for people who enjoy mountain biking as an outdoor adventure rather than simply a trail activity.

  • Long alpine descents
  • Technical natural terrain
  • High mountain ridgelines
  • Cycle-alpinism
  • Forest singletrack
  • Rocky technical sections
  • Traditional Pyrenean paths
  • E-MTB exploration and shuttle-supported enduro

Why Puro Pirineo Exists

A Destination Built By Riders

Puro Pirineo is one of Spain's most successful examples of a mountain-bike destination built from the ground up. More than 100 local businesses and 9 municipalities work together to maintain, promote and expand the network. The destination has invested heavily in recovering historic mountain paths, maintaining trails and supporting sustainable mountain-bike tourism.

  • Historic mountain paths recovered for MTB
  • Eco-shuttle contribution system helping fund trail maintenance
  • Local business and municipal support
  • A network that continues to evolve while staying rooted in the landscape
  • New Turbon Magico expansion under development

Scenery

Riding Beneath The Giants

There are many mountain-bike destinations with beautiful scenery. Very few have scenery on this scale. Every ride takes place beneath some of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees: Aneto, Posets, Maladeta, Perdiguero, Cotiella, Eriste and Turbon. Deep glacial valleys, alpine meadows, remote ridgelines and traditional stone villages complete the experience.

  • Aneto and Maladeta Massif
  • Posets and Perdiguero
  • Cotiella, Eriste and Turbon
  • Benasque Valley and Cerler
  • Glacial valleys, alpine meadows and stone villages

Best Season

June To October

Many of the signature routes climb into true alpine terrain and depend on snow conditions. Summer opens the high-mountain rides, while September is often considered the perfect month: stable weather, quieter trails and ideal temperatures.

  • Spring: limited high-mountain access
  • Summer: full alpine route potential
  • Autumn: excellent weather and quieter trails
  • Winter: high terrain usually snow-covered
  • Prime months: June, July, August, September and October

How We Build It

Bigger Mountains. Bigger Days.

Puro Pirineo rewards careful planning. The best routes often involve significant elevation, changing weather and serious mountain terrain. We design each trip around rider ability, fitness, weather, trail conditions, shuttle options and E-MTB range. The goal is not to ride the most trails. The goal is to ride the right trails.

  • Gallinero
  • Sierra Negra
  • Rabaltueras
  • Rincon del Cielo
  • La Picada
  • Sahun
  • Turbon Magico sector

Aragon Bike Proof Points

Gallinero, Llanos Del Hospital And Puerto De Sahun

The official Aragon Bike guide reinforces Puro Pirineo's flagship role with three route anchors. Integral del Gallinero climbs to the Bisaurri cabin at around 2,200 m before one of the best MTB descents in the Pyrenees. Castejon-Llanos del Hospital follows the River Esera through the Benasque Valley almost to the French border. Puerto de Sahun climbs toward 2,000 m before an unforgettable descent beside the Barbarisa Waterfall.

  • Puro Pirineo: 30 official trails and 700+ km in the Benasque Valley
  • Integral del Gallinero: 37.5 km, 1,670 m climbing, alpine meadows, rock and forest
  • Castejon-Llanos del Hospital: 31.2 km through the Esera Valley to the high Pyrenees
  • Puerto de Sahun: 31.3 km, 1,430 m climbing and descending, remembered-for-life descent
  • Excellent for enduro and all-mountain, but with options for the general public

Aragon Positioning

The Alpine Kingdom

Within Aragon, Puro Pirineo owns the high-mountain story. Los Mallos gives the visual icon, Sierra de Guara gives the canyon rider, Alto Gallego gives the mixed-group all-rounder and Maestrazgo gives the remote wilderness. Puro Pirineo is the place for riders who want big altitude, famous descents and pure Pyrenean scale.
