Push Horizons!

The Riding

Maestrazgo is The Forgotten Kingdom: a remote Aragon landscape where Spain seems to disappear into limestone canyons, empty plateaus, fortress villages and old mule tracks. This is not a trail-centre holiday. It is a wilderness expedition through Spanish Lapland, Templar frontier country and the abandoned highlands of eastern Aragon, where silence is not background noise. It is part of the ride.

Basecamp decision logic

Ride Intelligence

Use this as the quick-fit logic for season, bike setup, group level and how much support your trip needs.

Best season

April-June / September-October

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced / approx. S2-S4 depending on route choice

Full decision logic

Expand this when season, terrain, bike setup or support choices need a deeper check before choosing the basecamp.

Maestrazgo is a remote inland basecamp for riders who want old villages, limestone landscapes, ravines and the feeling of crossing a quieter Spain. It is less about instant trail gratification and more about route craft, distance, solitude and cultural depth.

Best season

April-June / September-October

Caution season

Winter can be cold at altitude; summer heat and remoteness require water and route planning.

Ride character

Remote inland Spain, limestone plateaus, medieval villages, deep ravines, dry mountain tracks, forest sections, BTT route networks and wild cultural landscapes.

Typical ride day

30-60 km / 800-1,600 m+ / 4-7 hours

Technical level

Intermediate to advanced / approx. S2-S4 depending on route choice

Fitness demand

Medium-high. Distances, remoteness and climbing can make days demanding even where trails are not extremely technical.

Best bike

Trail MTB or eMTB. Gravel may suit easier tracks, but MTB is better for technical/rugged variants.

eMTB suitability

Very good - especially for long distances, climbing and linking remote villages.

Guide logic

Useful for route selection, remote logistics, technical variants and cultural itinerary design.

Shuttle usefulness

Usually not central. The region works best as loop-based or point-to-point route craft.

Weather logic

Plan for exposure, heat, cold and limited services. Shoulder seasons offer the best balance.

Best for

  • Remote Spain explorers
  • eMTB adventure groups
  • Riders who like villages, ravines and cultural landscapes
  • Long-loop MTB riders
  • Groups wanting something beyond the famous regions

Not ideal for

  • Beginners expecting easy short loops
  • Riders wanting lift/shuttle infrastructure
  • Groups needing dense services every few kilometres
  • Pure enduro riders seeking constant technical descents

Why Ride Maestrazgo?

Ride Where Spain Disappears

One of Europe's most remote riding destinations, Maestrazgo is a place of deep canyons, limestone organs, medieval fortress villages and empty horizons. Ancient mule tracks cross landscapes where warrior monks, outlaws and mountain communities once moved between isolated strongholds. The riding is physical, exposed and deeply authentic: not polished, not crowded, and not interested in being convenient.

  • Archetype: The Forgotten Kingdom
  • Spanish Lapland silence and low-density riding
  • Templar frontier territory and fortress villages
  • UNESCO Global Geopark landscapes and limestone canyon systems

Basecamp

Fortanete: The Mountain Fortress

Fortanete is the cleanest base for the Forgotten Kingdom: high, remote and surrounded by route options that lead into forests, ravines, plateaus and fortress villages. The basecamp is practical rather than polished, with official BTT access, bike wash and repair support, trail information, direct route starts and the feeling that the modern world has loosened its grip.

  • Basecamp archetype: the Mountain Fortress
  • Around 1,400 m altitude and direct access to epic trails
  • Best for riders who want wilderness, silence and authenticity
  • Alternative bases: Cuevas de Canart, Cantavieja and Montoro de Mezquita

At A Glance

Spanish Lapland, Templar Frontier And Endless Wilderness

Maestrazgo is one of Spain's great low-density mountain regions. The scale is huge, services are spread out, and the riding rewards planning. This is exactly why it belongs in the EpicBikeTrails collection: it delivers the rare feeling of being far from everything while still having an official BTT backbone.

  • UNESCO Global Geopark
  • 1,700 m+ high plateaus
  • 57.6 km Alto Guadalope Epic
  • Templar frontier territory
  • Land of Ramon Cabrera
  • Spanish Lapland
  • Fortress villages
  • Excellent E-MTB wilderness destination

Signature Rides

The Five Rides That Define The Kingdom

The signature rides move through the full Maestrazgo story: Alto Guadalope as the backbone, Hoces de Guadalope as the stone cathedral, Pinares de Fortanete as the high forest ridge, Casas de San Juan as the abandoned frontier and Barranco de la Tosquilla as the canyon trail.

  • Alto Guadalope Enduro R13: the backbone of the kingdom
  • Hoces de Guadalope R09: the stone cathedral
  • Pinares de Fortanete R03: the high forest ridge
  • Casas de San Juan R06: the abandoned frontier
  • Barranco de la Tosquilla R05: the canyon trail

Hero Ride

Alto Guadalope Enduro R13

The ride that defines Maestrazgo is a full-day wilderness expedition across the spine of the Forgotten Kingdom. Alto Guadalope Enduro links limestone plateaus, deep ravines, ancient mountain corridors and fortress landscapes into one demanding route. It is not only a trail. It is a statement about distance, silence and commitment.

  • 57.6 km distance
  • 1,480 m climbing
  • Expert difficulty
  • Full-day wilderness enduro through limestone plateaus and ravines

The Defining Reveal

The Organos Reveal

The defining destination moment arrives at the Organos de Montoro. The forest opens, and giant stone organ pipes erupt from the canyon floor. The scale feels improbable: vertical limestone walls, Guadalope canyon depth and silence broken only by wind. This is where Maestrazgo stops being remote and becomes mythical.

  • Organos de Montoro vertical limestone walls
  • Guadalope canyon as the visual anchor
  • The moment the Forgotten Kingdom becomes visible
  • A landscape that feels carved, abandoned and sovereign

Ride Character

Maestrazgo Gravity

The riding unfolds in three phases. The high muelas bring wind, plateaus, exposure and enormous horizons. The limestone barrancos add rock, canyons and technical terrain. The ancient kingdom brings stone villages, mule paths, history and the feeling that every route has survived for centuries.

  • High muelas: wind, plateaus and exposure
  • Limestone barrancos: rock, canyons and technical terrain
  • Ancient kingdom: stone villages, mule paths and history
  • Long-distance E-MTB range and judgement matter

The Four Faces

Fortanete, Cuevas de Canart, Montoro de Mezquita And Cantavieja

The kingdom has four faces. Fortanete is the mountain fortress and highland basecamp. Cuevas de Canart is the canyon secret, with hidden valleys and stone architecture. Montoro de Mezquita is the stone cathedral, home of the Organos reveal. Cantavieja is the eagle's throne, a fortress village that makes the frontier history tangible.

  • Fortanete: the mountain fortress
  • Cuevas de Canart: the canyon secret
  • Montoro de Mezquita: the stone cathedral
  • Cantavieja: the eagle's throne

Scenery

The Sovereignty Of Silence

The emotional core of Maestrazgo is silence. Empty Spain, endless horizons, absolute isolation and fortress villages make the landscape feel sovereign. The cultural layer is equally strong: Templar frontier territory, the shadow of warrior monks, Ramon Cabrera's Carlist strongholds and mountain routes that once protected a medieval kingdom.

  • Primary natural force: limestone canyons, high plateaus and empty horizons
  • Cultural identity: Templar frontier, Ramon Cabrera and fortress villages
  • Terrain identity: wilderness enduro, mule tracks, ravines and stone corridors
  • Food ritual: jamon de Teruel, ternasco asado, black truffle and mountain wine

Best Season

April To November

April to November is the broad riding window. Spring brings green valleys and flowing rivers. Summer works better here than many Spanish interiors because of altitude, but heat and water still matter. Autumn is exceptional, with colour, clear air and strong trail conditions. Winter can be cold and snow-affected on the higher plateaus.

How We Build It

Wilderness Routes With Real Logistics

Maestrazgo trips are built around judgement. Distances are long, services are spread out and the best riding often lies far from towns. We combine Alto Guadalope, Hoces de Guadalope, Pinares de Fortanete, Cuevas de Canart, Montoro de Mezquita and fortress villages into routes that match weather, water, rider level and E-MTB range.

  • Best as a 4-6 night Wild Spain wilderness basecamp
  • E-MTB strongly recommended for range and route flexibility
  • Guided or locally supported for the most remote days
  • Pairs naturally with Los Mallos, Guara, Ainsa or Sierra Espuna

Who It Is For

Riders Who Want Silence And Scale

Maestrazgo is perfect for adventure riders, E-MTB explorers, experienced trail riders, gravel-MTB crossover groups and riders who want to feel far from everything. It is less suitable for beginners, bike-park riders, cafe-every-hour expectations or groups that need dense services and easy bailouts.

  • Perfect for: adventure riders, E-MTB riders and wilderness seekers
  • Perfect for: riders who value history, silence and authenticity
  • Less suitable for: beginners, bike-park riders and groomed-flow seekers
  • Less suitable for: groups needing dense services or simple logistics

Basecamp DNA

Adventure, Isolation And Wilderness

Maestrazgo scores highest for adventure, isolation, scenic value, cultural depth and wilderness. It is strong for E-MTB and enduro, more technical than it first appears, and deliberately low on family suitability because the best experiences are remote, long and self-reliant.

  • Adventure 5/5
  • Isolation 5/5
  • Scenic Value 5/5
  • Cultural Depth 5/5
  • Wilderness 5/5
  • E-MTB Friendly 5/5
  • Enduro Riding 4/5
  • Technical Challenge 4/5
  • Flow Riding 3/5
  • Family Friendly 2/5

Why We Selected It

Because Silence Still Rules Here

We selected Maestrazgo because very few places in Europe still combine official riding structure with this level of emptiness, history and mountain isolation. It brings the EpicBikeTrails collection a true forgotten kingdom: remote, demanding, beautiful and honest.

Verdict

The Forgotten Kingdom

If Los Mallos is Beneath The Giants and Sierra de Guara is The Rock Cathedrals, then Maestrazgo is The Forgotten Kingdom: a place where riders cross silent limestone frontiers and discover the last Spain where silence still rules the landscape.
