The Via Verde Ojos Negros is best understood as one long transformation: high mining country, Teruel, the high railway corridor, Alto Palancia and the Mediterranean finish at Sagunto, with Valencia as an optional urban extension.

From iron country to Mediterranean light
The journey begins in Sierra Menera, where the land still carries the memory of iron. Around Ojos Negros, the route feels remote, spacious and almost forgotten: mining remains, silent railway traces, wind, stone and wide inland skies.
From there, the old railway line begins its long movement south-east. It crosses open highlands and quiet villages before reaching Teruel, one of Spain's great Mudejar cities. The towers, brickwork and compact historic centre give the first night a strong cultural anchor.
Beyond Teruel, the railway character becomes more dramatic. The route climbs gently to Puerto Escandon before entering tunnels, cuttings, pine forests and viaducts. Around Sarrion, the ride moves through black truffle country. Near Albentosa, the railway architecture becomes monumental.
Then the landscape changes again. The line drops towards Castellon and the Alto Palancia corridor. Jerica, Navajas and Segorbe bring medieval streets, riverside landscapes, historic centres and village life. The air grows warmer. Orange groves begin to appear.
Finally, the Expedition arrives in Sagunto, where the story closes with powerful symmetry. The iron that left Ojos Negros once came here to be transformed. Today, riders arrive under the castle, near the Roman theatre, the old industrial memory and the sea.

Mining Highlands
Ojos Negros / Santa Eulalia to Teruel
The Expedition begins where the story began: in the mineral lands of Teruel. Around Ojos Negros and Sierra Menera, the landscape feels spacious, dry and quiet. Old railway remains, former stations and the memory of the iron line give the first day its identity before the ride arrives in Mudejar Teruel.
Highlights: Ojos Negros mining heritage, Sierra Menera atmosphere, Santa Eulalia and Cella area, former railway stations, open highlands, Mudejar Teruel and Jamon de Teruel.
Culture and food: Teruel gives the first major cultural stop: brick towers, compact historic streets, local cafes and Jamon de Teruel.
Rider note: This stage sets the emotional tone. Ride it slowly enough to understand where the journey comes from.

The High Railway
Teruel to Barracas / Albentosa area
Leaving Teruel, the line climbs gently toward Puerto Escandon, the high point of the journey. Tunnels, railway cuttings, pine forests, old stations and the Albentosa viaduct turn the greenway into a cinematic railway corridor.
Highlights: Puerto Escandon, tunnels, railway cuttings, pine forests, Sarrion truffle country, Albentosa viaduct, mountain scenery and old stations.
Culture and food: This is black truffle country. Around Sarrion, the food culture becomes one of the route's great pleasures.
Rider note: Lights are essential for tunnel sections. This is the most cinematic infrastructure day.
Etapa 3 Approx. 90 km
Mediterranean Descent
Barracas / Segorbe to Sagunto
After the high railway, the line softens and drops through Alto Palancia. Jerica, Navajas and Segorbe bring medieval streets, riverside landscapes and historic centres before orchards, citrus and coastal light announce Sagunto and the sea.
Highlights: Jerica, Navajas, Segorbe, Regajo landscape, Palancia corridor, orange groves, Sagunto Castle, Roman theatre and Mediterranean finish.
Culture and food: The table shifts from inland mountain flavours toward Mediterranean produce, village bakeries, citrus, local wines and the first taste of the coast.
Rider note: The final stage is about emotion: the slow arrival from mineral country to sea level.
Optional extension
Sagunto to Valencia via the Via Xurra
For riders who want a major Mediterranean city finish, the Expedition can continue from Sagunto to Valencia via the Via Xurra. This section is less dramatic than the main Ojos Negros route, but it is practical, flat and gives the journey a powerful urban finale.

Planning the Expedition
Accessible still needs good planning
Best season
March to June and September to November are the best windows. Avoid peak summer heat on the lower Mediterranean sections; winter can be cold in the Teruel highlands.
Bike choice
Gravel, trekking, MTB and e-bike all work. Avoid narrow pure road tyres, and carry lights for tunnel sections.
Difficulty
Technically easy to moderate. The challenge is distance, wind, weather and logistics, not technical trail riding.
Direction
Ride Ojos Negros / Santa Eulalia to Sagunto. After Puerto Escandon the route trends steadily toward the Mediterranean.

Start at Ojos Negros for the full-origin story, Santa Eulalia for the classic greenway start, or Teruel for easier access.
Services
Accommodation, food and services exist in key towns, but some sections are remote. Plan water and supplies carefully.
